Is it a sin for women to wear jewelry?

In this article I answer at the question if is it a sin wearing jewelry or other accessories for beauty. The question is below:

Please, answer my question: is it a sin to wear earrings? If yes, why? And if not, why not? Thank you.

wear jewelryLet us not get over what is written

It is known that many churches and denominations have different and divided views on these topic, but God does not say in the Bible that wearing jewelry is a sin.

Those who believe that women should not wear any jewelry, argue it using the following verse from the I Epistle of the Apostle Peter:

Your adornment must not be merely external–braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. (1 Peter 3:3-6)(NASB)

But carefully reading this passage, we see that we can not accept such an interpretation of the text. If we say that according to what we have read women are categorically forbidden to wear jewelry, then, what about the other things listed on here as braiding the hair and putting on dresses?I heard about preachers who categorically forbade women to braid the hair, from this verse. God forbid to apply the same principle and the next thing on the list, that is putting on dresses…

External adornment should not be a priority or obsession

This is the truth that Apostle Peter wants to communicate, by contrast, in this passage.A woman should not be more concerned about how she adorns herself (clothes, jewelry and hair braiding) than she adorns the hidden person of the heart with the transformation of the character.God expects Christian women to dress and to adorn wisely, but not so that the external adornment puts in the shadow the true beauty, which is the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit.

I have recently heard someone complaining that she can not financially help someone in the family who had major problems, but at the same time, she was doing the utmost to buy a nice and big gold ring for herself.I think this is a case to which the words of the Scripture can be applied.

God adorned His lover

In the book the prophet Ezekiel, God compares his relationship with Israel with the relationship of a man and his beloved wife. Here’s how God describes this relationship:

I also clothed you with embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk. I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck. I also put a ring in your nostril, earrings in your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your dress was of fine linen, silk and embroidered cloth You ate fine flour, honey and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to royalty. Then your fame went forth among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was perfect because of My splendor which I bestowed on you,” declares the Lord GOD. (Ezekiel 16:10-14)(NASB)

But …

Outer beauty can become a trap for the soul

This was the case with Israel, God’s lover as described in the continuation of the same text:

But you trusted in your beauty and played the harlot because of your fame, and you poured out your harlotries on every passer-by who might be willing. (Ezekiel 16:15)(NASB)

What value do jewelry have for you? What is their place on your priority list? What message do you communicate people through the jewelry that you wear or do not wear?

What do you think about wearing jewelry?
