Is a Christian allowed to make the sign of the cross?

Question:

Am I allowed to make the sign of the cross? If not, then why?

Nowhere in the Bible, God teaches us that we should make the sign of the cross. We don’t see in the New Testament that any of our Lord Jesus’ disciples made the sign of the Cross or taught others to do so. When He was still on the earth, Lord Jesus talked and taught the people about the Cross the following:

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)

Did our Lord Jesus Christ mean that a Christian has to make the sign of the cross, by saying “take up your cross and follow me”? By no means. I also recommend you to read the article:

Is a crucifix just a symbol without any significance?

From our Lord Jesus’ teachings, we learn that the cross is not a sign, it’s a heart’s attitude that every man should have by denying himself and following God with all his heart . However I should mention that the Bible does not forbid a Christian to make the sign of the cross, meaning that when someone makes the sign of the cross he does not commit a sin.

The same way, it’s not right to persecute the ones who refuse to make the sign of the cross or to force them to do so. If you believe that only those who make the sign of the cross can see God, then you are mistaken… Not the sign of the cross makes you a real Christian, but being born again, which is God’s gift to those who believe with all their hearts in Jesus.

It is also wrong to believe that the sign of the cross is something magic that protects you from harm. God’s children are hidden with Christ in God, and no one can take us from God’s hand. Our protection is not the cross, but the Name of God which is a strong tower and the righteous run into it and are saved.

May God help us stay faithful to Him and follow Him with all our hearts until the day of our death!
