Question:
I almost finished reading the Bible and I have a perplexity. Why isn’t the language in which the Bible was written accessible to everyone, so that no one would doubt its veracity? In my opinion, it is clear that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the One promised from the Old Testament and our Savior, but not everyone can understand the chain of events and allusive language that is used in the Bible.
I want to start my answer with a reference in the New Testament where Apostle Paul gives an answer to this question. He says:
Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not lose heart, but we have renounced the things hidden because of shame, not walking in craftiness or adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:1-4)(NASB)
The apostle indicates two reasons why people can not understand the language of the Bible.
The unbelieving mind
The Sacred Scriptures are veiled, that means they can not be understood by people who have unbelieving mind. Faith is a main condition for someone to be able to know God in depth. In the Epistle to the Hebrews, it is written this:
And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)(NASB)
Another reason why people can not understand the Bible message is that …
They have been blinded by the god of this world
Satan is the enemy of human souls and he wants to take them all to perdition. He takes advantage of the unbelief of the people to lead them this way and he blinds their minds through all possible ways that he has. I remember Dan Brown’s book “The Da Vinci Code.” This is the most brazen lie and manipulation, but how many people have sought to investigate? I was shocked to see everywhere people reading this book and taking its message as truth. Why has none of them sought to verify the written in the Bible. Most do not know the Bible and do not give interest to know it, but were immediately caught in Satan’s lie and they still think they “know the latest and most accurate information”. What deception.
Spiritual things must be spiritually discerned
What people call allusive language in the Bible, God calls “spiritual talk” that can only be understood by those who have the Spirit of God. Here’s how Apostle Paul explains why some people understand the Scriptures and others do not:
We speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; but just as it is written, ”THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:7-16)(NASB)
Thus, as written in the above verses, the Biblical language does not affect the understanding of its deep message, but whether the man has the Spirit of God that can guide him into all truth.
Before you start reading the Bible, ask God to guide you by His Spirit so that you can understand its message.
