Was there the tradition of breaking the bread before Jesus Christ?

QUESTION:

Hello! I understood from the Internet that Jesus did not establish the breaking of the bread, but it was a Jewish tradition, is it true? I want to know God more and I do not know how to approach Him, I am afraid that if I deepen, I will be disappointed.

The breaking of the bread was instituted by the Lord Jesus Christ as a sign of the New Covenant, and even if somebody used the same elements, that is wine and bread, for certain traditions, you can absolutely be sure that no one used them as Jesus did, that is, as a sign of the covenant. Here’s what God tells us in the Bible:

While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:26-29)(NASB)

The meaning of the Lord’s Supper is not limited to broken bread and wine. The essence of the Lord’s Supper is to draw attention to the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ, and that could not be done through traditions either by Jews or by other people.

May God bless you in this desire of knowing God. The Bible says:

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”(Jeremiah 29:13)(NASB)

God is revealed in the Bible, which is His Word, His revelation. The first thing you have to do is take the Bible and read the New Testament first and then the Old Testament to have an overview of the Bible. Then I recommend you to take the inductive study books of the Bible. Inductive means deepening. To begin with, I recommend your course “Lord, Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days” by Kay Arthur. Then, the second course I recommend is “God, are you there?” which is a profound study of the Gospel of John.

Do not seek to know God only from the information that is on the Internet, because besides the sound teaching you will also find many false and heretical information, and if you do not know the Bible, you will not be able to distinguish the truth from lies and the false doctrine from the sound one. May God bless and help you to know Him.
