Jesus is God | Devotional | John 1: 1-14

Today begins a series of devotional messages based on the Gospel of John. I set out to acquaint you with the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, John set the same goal when he wrote his Gospel. In John chapter 20:31 it is written thus:

but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in His name.

It is through these devotionals that I want to explain who the Lord Jesus was, what was His teaching, what it means that He is Christ the Son of God, and why through Him, and not through anyone else, man can come to life, or eternal life.

Gospel of John chapter 1 verses 1-14:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of mankind.  And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not grasp it.A man came, one sent from God, and his name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light. This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him.  He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

From the very beginning, John nailed an absolutely important truth to his readers — the Lord Jesus is the Word and He is God.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

All creation around us: the earth, the heavens, the moon, the sun, the stars, the birds, the animals, the waters, the things seen and unseen were created by the Word of God.

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being.

We read in the book of Genesis 1:3,6

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light  or Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

All we see around us is the work of God, and not the result of the so-called Big Bang.

Another truth we learn about the Lord Jesus is that He is the life-giving Light.

This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person.

The fact that we were born here we owe to Him and is His plan. We did not appear out of the blue and we are not a product of Darwin’s evolutionism.

A third truth that John points out is that God took on flesh and dwelt among men. Incredible, but true.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

Jesus is not a legend. He was a real man, a proven fact. Even the counting of years throughout the earth is done in relation to His person. We are in the year 2019 after Christ. According to God’s plan, the Lord Jesus was born in Israel 2,000 years ago from the virgin Mary as a body. But not from the seed of man, but from the Holy Spirit. Although He came to His people to bring salvation from sins, not all the people received Him.

He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a man, but of God.

All people are God’s creatures, but not all are His children. In order to become a child of God, it is necessary to receive the Lord Jesus, to believe in Him and His work. When someone receives the Lord Jesus, he or she experiences a spiritual birth, different from the physical birth — the rebirth of God, which we will study in another devotional.

And the fourth truth, and the last for today, is that the Lord Jesus is the only begotten of the Father.

and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father

Beyond being God by His nature, He is also called the Son of God the Father. He was not created as the first man on earth was created, Adam. He has always existed, from eternity. I will return to the phrase “the only begotten of the Father” because it has many meanings in God’s Word.

If you would like to study the Gospel of John in a Bible study group, write to me in the comments or in private. Likewise, if you have decided to be reconciled to God and become His child, let me know that I will pray for you and guide you in the way of faith.

Next time we will read verses 15-28. We will study about John the Baptist and his role in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us pray: “Our Father who art in heaven. Thank you for this important truth that Jesus Christ is God. Through Him all things were created. He has existed since eternity. I was created by Him. Amen”
