Gain the true wisdom!

Even if there are people that declare this emphatically, anyway not all things can be bought with money. One of the things that can not be bought with money is the true wisdom. God is ready to give it to everyone who looks for it and wants to get it. In this article I want to present you what the Word of God says about getting the true wisdom in the Epistle to Colossians.

Understand the true wisdom

I remembr how last summer a teenager, who participated at a youth camp said that he was thankful to a classmate, because that one had taught him how to cheat at the lessons and exams so that he might get a high grade. The teenager named that thing wisdom. We know well that this is cheating but not wisdom. Wisdom relates to the knowledge of some mysteries that are not known to all people and that make you live your life in a nice way, have beautiful relations with God and with people, and inherit the Kingdom of heavens. Here is what the Bible writes about this great mystery:

That is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints,  whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. (Colossians 1;26–28)(NASB)

The greatest mystery of the greatest wisdom is the knowledge of Christ and accepting Him in heart. This changes our lives when we want to know all knowledge that is in Christ and this gives to us the hope of inheritance of His glory in eternity. This is the true wisdom. That’s why, so that you may not be misled…

Understand what is not the true wisdom

I saw people that try to make up their own wisdom in this life, trying to gather all that they think is the best from all religions and teachings. This is not a good priciple even when you learn a profession, but especially when you want to get the true wisdom. In the ancient world there were some people that tried to “improve” and to “complete” the teaching of Christ with the Greek philosophy of that time. The name of this heresy or wrong teaching was “gnosticism” and it was a danger for the Christians of the primary church. That’s why Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians from the city of Colossae this way:

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. (Colossians 2;1–4)(NASB)

Paul gives them one more warning, when he says:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form. (Colossians 2:8–9)(NASB)

All these things listed above, that are called the elementary principles of the world by Paul…

… have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence. (Colossians 2:23)(NASB)

Look for the wisdom of Christ that can be found on the pages of the Holy Scriptures and don’t be deceived by those who come to bring you elementary principles of the world.

Realize the gains of the true wisdom

The teenager about whom I wrote above, considered as a gain that he had learnt to cheat. What a great deceit! But he is not the only one who is deceived in this way. Many people that are in the darkness of this world and that don’t know the wisdom of God that is in Christ define wisdom something that can be qualified as a “curse” rather. The true wisdom, that is in Jesus Christ brings the hope of glory for eternity. The wisdom of God changes our lives totally on this earth beacause He makes us put off the old man, with his deeds and put on the new man, that is renewed in knowledge, according to the image of the One who made him. Being clothed in the new man we can put to death our earthly members, such as immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, greed which amounts to idolatry. True wisdom will be seen in every aspect of life anytime.

Gain the wisdom of God

Apostle Paul said this truth to the Christians from Colossae and it is available for all Christians of all times:

And in Him (Christ) you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority. (Colossians 2:10)(NASB)

We can gain this wisdom by the knowledge and understanding of the Word of God by faith in Jesus Christ. That’s why, Apostle Paul says:

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching. (Colossians 3:16)(NASB)

Receive Christ in your life because in Him the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.
