About the Feast of the Harvest

Christians are used to have a holiday every fall, when they come before God to thank for all the harvest received from Him. Such a holiday was also celebrated in our church. More than a month ago, one of the readers of the portal Moldova Creștină asked me to give more explanations regarding the origins of this holiday. This is what I intend to do in this article.

The Feast of the Harvest was set up by God for His people. This is what God says in the Holy Sciptures:

Also you shall observe the Feast of the Harvest of the first fruits of your labors from what you sow in the field; also the Feast of the Ingathering at the end of the year when you gather in the fruit of your labors from the field. (Exodus 23:16)(NASB)

God hasn’t fixed a specific date to celebrate the Feast of Ingathering the Harvest. If for other feasts or it is better to say, for all feasts from the Bible, God has fixed an exact time when they had to be celebrated, then the feast of ingathering the harvest had to be celebrated when all crops had been gathered.

God insists to celebrate this feast. He says:

You shall celebrate the Feast of Weeks, that is, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. (Exodus 34:22)(NASB)

It is interesting why God has set up this feast and why He asks people to celebrate it. Because this feast makes us:

  1. Realize that all crops we have are from God and they are an expression of the kindness, love and care that He has for us.

  2. Administer crops correctly, being aware that we have received them from Him.

  3. Give to others from them, as the Lord has given to us.

  4. Have a thankful attitude towards God all the days of our life.

  5. Not put on airs, thinking that we have these crops only because of our own efforts.

May God help us celebrate the Feast of the Harvest beautifully and bring a rich harvest for His Kingdom.
