What shall you do when you are not motivated by the profession you are studying for?

sesiuneI received this message today and I decided to answer it in an article, because, I suppose that there are many who face this situation. So, here is the question I was asked:

I am a student and sometimes I simply lose the desire to learn. The only thing remains and pushes me to go on is the shame to get low grades and I focus too much on grades that I get, but I also know that this is not the most important thing. How much do grades matter? At the same time, I am not pleased with the specialty that I study and I do not feel that this is what I want. Is this a common thing? Is it true that the desire appears as you practice a specialty? For this reason, I think, I no longer wish to study for me and my knowledge … and I do not find in many cases, the principle to motivate me correctly. Also, I do not want to study perfunctorily and so I am in a dilemma. Can you help me with some advice?

Do not hurry

When you learn or work, you can face moments of tiredness, despair, etc. For example, if you are a doctor, sometimes you are very requested, you may not be understood by those you love, or by colleagues, etc. It is not something that happens to you for the first time. All people have passed through such times, so do not haste to take decisions then, because you can make wrong decisions that will affect you and others. The Word of God warns us in this regard when It says:

The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty. (Proverbs of Solomon 21:5)(NASB)

Do not be mislead by your own perspective upon things

Sometimes it seems to us that we don’t need some things, that we make an effort in vain, etc. I believed with all my heart and I entered the covenant with the Lord Jesus when I was a fourth year student at the History faculty of the State University of Moldova. That same year I studied the Holy Scriptures very deeply and I could not wait the fall to submit the documents at the Faculty of Theology in Romania. So I did. I went to the Seminary to take the admission exams. The rector found out from the first conversation that I was a student and that I had one more year to graduate the History Faculty. He did not tell me anything, and let me take the exams, but they did so as not to be admitted in that year. Thus, I remained and I learned a year, I graduated the History Faculty and I also wrote the diploma work entitled “The Resurrection of Jesus Christ in the world historical literature”. I was very interesting to touch this subject and the teacher who coordinated the diploma paper had the opportunity to learn many things from the Holy Scriptures, so, in the end he said proudly: “I say clearly that I do not know a priest who knows the Bible better than this student.” Then I also graduated the Faculty of Theology of the University of Bucharest, but the fact that I graduated the Faculty of History was helpful and I am so grateful to all those who had taught me.

Consult someone regarding the decisions you want to make

I can not understand the whole picture of the situation described in the message sent by the reader. Therefore, I suggest her to consult with wise people, and especially with her parents who, I suppose, have made and make a great financial investment for these studies. God says:

Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed. A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word. (Proverbs of Solomon 15:22-23)(NASB)

Think how you can serve the best

This should be the motivation of each man and if you are Christian, you have to think about how you can share the Gospel the best through the profession that you choose. This is a worthy motivation and the occupation must be chosen according to it.

What is the role of the grades?

They are a unit of measurement that show the size of the effort made by the student. It is true that some people use them for manipulation, for intimidation, etc. A child of God will seek, however, to learn well always, not having the purpose to have the best grades at any price, but because God’s Word says:

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Colossians 3:23-24)(NASB)

Go to another school only when you are sure concerning the goal you have

When I was teaching a winter seminar, I challenged over 120 young people who were there, that, according to their abilities to go to study journalism, so that we may restore truth and integrity in the mass media of our country. Many were motivated by that call and saw in it a purpose that it is worthy to invest the life. One of them was Ion Druta, a young man who was a student at the Agricultural University. He decided firmly, and went in the fall and became a student at the Faculty of Journalism together with others who were motivated by this purpose. Then, with the whole team we founded The Free Newspaper and Ion made a great effort and continues to make it, being the editor-in-chief at the moment. I even ask him to write a comment on what it meant to him when he made the decision to move to another faculty.

Do not study only for the diploma

I do not know how the situation is now that higher education became a fashion item and many young people do not feel good if they don’t have the diploma of higher education. Thus, we live in a country where almost all have higher education, and there is no young man in public transport who would offer the seat to an old woman or to a pregnant woman, or just to ladies. It is more important for them to have the diploma, but humanity, which, in fact, is more important, doesn’t present interest to them. Thus, some transform the higher education in a cult, a religion. I know a couple who got married when the wife was a student at the school of medicine. Two twins were born to them and it was normal for the mother to take care of their growth. However, immediately after graduating medical school, she went to the University of medicine. She finished very bad.No. She graduated the University, but her husband left the home, her children have grown with the grandparents and she went to sell at the market, not working according to the diploma for which she had sacrificed her family. Now she is very miserable and she made miserable all her family members.

If you are not sure you learn the profession that you want to use to serve people, don’t hurry to take decisions. Don’t be mislead by your own perspective, but look for the advice of the wise men, parents and mentors.Think about how you can serve people the best and then do your utmost to get ready to serve them qualitatively through the profession you have chosen.Do not learn for the sake of the diploma, or just to have higher education because …

Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men. (Proverbs of Solomon 22:29)(NASB)
