How to act when the leader is chosen?

When our children went to school after vacation, once they came back from school and told me how they chose the leader of the class. I advised them how to act other time in such situations and I thought it would be useful to publish these pieces of advice, that can be applied whenever a leader is being chosen.

1. Don’t forward your own candidature

This shows lack of modesty, and a wish to dominate over others, not to lead them with wisdom to accomplish a purpose. And then, if you will have to be chosen, you will have to lead not only your own person, but the whole group of people that chose you. That’s why, don’t ever forward your person’s candidature.

2. Put up the candidature of the person who deserves this position

Think who is going to face the problems of that group of people, who will be able to lead people, who will find solutions and whose decisions people will want to follow, because they will be wise. Forward the candidature of that person and not of those that maybe are your friends, or made a service to you, or maybe you are relatives, etc. Here is what Jesus taught His disciples in the following situation:

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.” He said to them, “My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father.” And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (The Gospel of Matthew 20:20–28)(NASB)

3. Don’t accept your candidature to be forward unless you are sure that at least 50% of voters chose you

If you have qualities of a leader, you will surely be put up as a candidature. If you are not sure that more than 50% of voters want you in this position, don’t give a positive answer, because this will generate conflicts and words that you don’t want to hear for you sure. Something else, if you are not supported by more than 50% of voters, each of your proposal will not be accepted.

4. Don’t accept to be a leader if you don’t have an action plan for people’s good

I have once heard on radio a very interesting definition of the word politician: “a man that makes promises, so that he might be believed and then, he can give explanations why he hasn’t kept his promises, so that he is believed again”. Don’t be one of these people and don’t make empty promises and don’t accept to be a leader only for the position, without having a certain action plan and knowing what you want to do for the good of people.

5. Don’t accept to be a chosen a leader unless you have a team that will help and support you

No matter how great the plan of the leader is, if he doesn’t have a team of good poeple to help him and to give him their support and help, he will not accomplish much. That’s why, if you don’t have such a team, don’t accept the leading position, but let it to those who have this team and can do more.

May God bless us with leaders that want the good of people and that bring joy to every group they work in.
