What can you do when you are not satisfied with anything in life?

Question:

Hello! I would like to hear some advice on what a person who is not satisfied in life should do. All joyous occasions as well as positive moments in life are temporary. Everything, including positive things, is fleeting. Thank you.

You situation is actually a good one, something that every person on this earth needs to understand, that is, all the pleasures of this earth are temporary. Once this state is reached, a person will begin to seek for what is not temporary, what is eternal, and by doing so, he will find the source of eternal satisfaction. God created us according to His image and likeness. We were created to desire eternity and that is why no person can attain true satisfaction among the fleeting pleasures of this earth. Unfortunately, all of the pleasures of this world are temporal and most of them are sinful leaving the sinner unsatisfied. You need to search for God with all of your heart if you want eternal satisfaction and He is found in the person of Jesus Christ.

1. Begin studying the Bible

In Psalm 1, king David relates the following truth to us:

1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers ! 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither ; And in whatever he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.

I would like to point out that man’s true satisfaction is found in the Law of the Lord when he delights in the Word of God and meditates on It day and night. Kind David also address the same subject in Psalm 119 and here are some important truths from this Psalm.

14 I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies, As much as in all riches.

16 I shall delight in Your statutes ; I shall not forget Your word.

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, And revive me in Your ways.

47 I shall delight in Your commandments, Which I love.

72 The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Search the Scriptures and you will find the source of true satisfaction, walking in obedience to God on a daily basis.

King Solomon wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, about his efforts in the search of true satisfaction in this life. Being a king, he had the chance to experience literally everything that this life has to offer. According to his own words, after experiencing each of the pleasures that the world has to offer, he was left deceived and unsatisfied by the vanity of it all. After all of his experiences, he said the following:

13 The conclusion , when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. 14 For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12)

2. Enter the New Covenant through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ

Our Savior, Jesus Christ, is alive and He calls all people to Himself. He calls all people to enter into the New Covenant in order to receive forgiveness of their sins as well as receiving the Holy Spirit which gives you the power to live a life of obedience to God and experience true satisfaction in this life. This joyous state of satisfaction will not be impacted by life’s circumstances. When Jesus walked this earth, He said the following:

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11)

May the Lord enlighten the understanding of your heart so that you can understand the Gospel and receive true satisfaction which is found in Jesus Christ.
