What does the Bible say about a Christian’s attitude towards Internet pornography?

Even though it is one of the newest communication technologies, the Internet has conquered the whole world in a very short time and is present in almost all aspects of human activity. From the airport and the hospital to children’s games, everyone is taking advantage of this powerful technology. I also use this technology to make this article, and others like it, public. At the same time, the sinful nature of man has left its mark on this technology, as well as on all other human activities and inventions.

According to statistics posted on The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc. register 68 million daily searches by users with reference to explicit pornographic content, which make up 25% of the total number of searches. So, every fourth search follows pornographic content.

According to statistics, every second (1 second) $ 3075.64 is spent on pornographic products, 28,258 Internet users watch pornography, and another 372 users are just typing porn-related terms into the browser’s search box.

The image below represents the growth of Internet users who turn to pages with indecent content. The progression of this evil, which is not stopped, but destroys the lives of people, families, nations and humanity as a whole, is striking.

The statistics below give us terrible figures:

  • Porn sites make up 12% of the total number of websites.
  • 8% of all emails are also pornographic
  • 42.7% of Internet users watch pornography and 34% were inadvertently exposed to these sites.
  • Children make 116,000 requests daily on porn sites
  • Of all the requests for sinful sex that young people and teenagers make to each other, 89% are made through chat.

Internet pornography has become a major problem for Christians as well.

Here are some numbers that prove it:

  • In the United States, there is a Christian men’s organization called Promise Keepers. According to a survey, 53% of the men members of this organization confessed that in the last week they watched pornography,
  • 47% of Christians confessed that pornography is a problem in their homes

The influence of pornography on women

  • Of all women who use the Internet, 70% keep their experiences and searches a secret, and 17% of women are pathologically addicted to Internet pornography.
  • Women call and use chat services twice as much as men
  • 13% of women access porn pages even while at work.

These statistics show that Internet pornography is an evil that affects all categories of society and the consequences we will all bear, if we do not do something to stop this evil, at least from entering your own personal life to destroy it.

Pornography affects the mind and life of the person who is exposed to it

The wise man Solomon writes in the book of Proverbs as follows:

“Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)( NASB)

In the ancient world, people believed that the heart is the place of human feelings and thoughts or, in other words, performs the functions of what we call the mind today. This concept has remained with our people and is beautiful when we say to someone: “I love you with all my heart.” We speak from the heart, but we keep in mind that we love that person with all our thoughts and emotions. In the above verse God teaches us to guard our hearts more than anything, for out of it come the springs of life. Pornography has a negative effect on the heart or the mind. It affects the human mind so that it makes him totally obsessed with the desire to commit those perversions he has seen and to want others, which seem more promising to him.

For both men and women who watch pornography, sexual intercourse becomes something cheap, something mechanical, devoid of any soul and that can be done with anyone. These people poison their minds or allow others to poison them, and thus the sources of their lives become poisoned. A man or woman obsessed with pornography cannot build a strong family and enjoy it.

Exposure to pornography is fornication

Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’ but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”(Matthew 5:27-28)( NASB)

This is exactly what people who access sexual, indecent and pornographic content do. They commit fornication in their minds, and the sin committed in the mind is equivalent to that committed in deed. In fact, every sin committed begins in the mind.

To show how serious the consequences of committing fornication are, Jesus said:

If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell. (Matthew 5:29-30)( NASB)

These verses warn us not only about the consequences of fornication and pornography, but they warn us to take action and stop this evil in our lives. The sexual aspect is intimate, mysterious, and that is why people end up doing things that are not allowed in this aspect of life.

Chat for women carries a danger equivalent to pornography for men

In a survey of Canadian university students, 87% of respondents said they had virtual sex using Instant Messenger, Webcam and phone. It is a well-known fact that just as men are sexually stimulated by what they see, so women become stimulated by the words they hear, because women want to hear beautiful words. This is one of the explanations why women use chat services twice as much as men.

Chat allows you to meet and communicate with strangers. Most of the time, men who use chat know seduction techniques and in the shortest time the girls who are attracted to these discussions will end up addressing topics related to sex. If you were in another circumstance, you would be ashamed, or if the communicators could at least see each other, it would intimidate women or girls. However, the fact that chat does not place this responsibility on people, makes them abuse, greatly abuse the emotions and feelings of the person on the other side of communication.

A wise woman will not enter into sincere and intimate discussions with any man on the street. Why then do so many women allow themselves to go into intimate conversations with strangers through chat and thus allow them this emotional and sexual abuse?

Don’t let debauchery enter your life!

The righteous Job said:

“I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?” (Job 31:1)( NASB)

In the same context, Job says that he did not let his heart (mind) follow his eyes, nor should his heart be deceived by any woman. All these things go in a progression. If a man or a woman cannot control his sexual instincts, he will allow his heart to be poisoned by words or images that affect him badly, and then, later, his heart, that is, his mind will follow his eyes or ears and they will destroy their lives by immorality.

What to do now?

Are you guilty of the sins presented above? Do not try to hide these sins because you have not been seen by anyone. God is omnipresent. Come to Him with repentance from the heart and He will forgive you as He says in His Word, when He says:

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)( NASB)

Believe in the Lord Jesus from the heart, confess your sins, repent, and then stop sinning.
