After publishing the article “Was there sacramental priesthood the Church of the Apostles?<\/a>” I received this comment:<\/p>\n

I agree that in the church of the New Testament the word \u201cpriest\u201d is not mentioned and I even agree that priests in general (but there are exceptions) mislead many people from the truth.<\/em>\u00a0But if we speak of words, in the New Testament church we do not find the word \u201cpastor\u201d either, as some evangelical community call this service.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The word “pastor” is used in the New Testament.<\/p>\n

Christ gave some as pastors<\/h2>\n

In the Epistle to Ephesians the Apostle Paul wrote:<\/p>\n

And He <\/sup>gave <\/sup>some as<\/i> apostles, and some as<\/i> prophets, and some as<\/i> <\/sup>evangelists, and some as<\/i> pastors<\/strong> and <\/sup>teachers, <\/sup>for the equipping of the <\/sup>saints for the work of service, to the building up of <\/sup>the body of Christ; until we all attain to <\/sup>the unity of the faith, and of the <\/sup><\/sup>knowledge of the Son of God, to a <\/sup>mature man, to the measure of the stature <\/sup>which belongs to the <\/sup>fullness of Christ. <\/sup>As a result, we are <\/sup>no longer to be children, <\/sup>tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by <\/sup>craftiness <\/sup>in <\/sup>deceitful scheming; but <\/sup>speaking the truth <\/sup>in love, <\/sup>we are to <\/sup>grow up in all aspects<\/i> into Him who is the <\/sup>head, even<\/i> Christ,from whom <\/sup>the whole body, being fitted and held together <\/sup>by what every joint supplies, according to the <\/sup>proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself <\/sup>in love. (Ephesians 4:11-16)(NASB)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, Christ gave the service of a pastor in the Church for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ, i.e. the Church.<\/p>\n

Bishops have the duty to shepherd the Church<\/h2>\n

When he said goodbye to the elders of Ephesus, the Apostle Paul said:<\/p>\n

Be on guard for yourselves and for all <\/sup>the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you <\/sup>overseers, to shepherd <\/sup><\/strong>the church of God which <\/sup>He <\/sup>purchased <\/sup>with His own blood. (Acts 20:28)(NASB)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Elders must shepherd the Church<\/h2>\n

Apostle Peter wrote:<\/p>\n

Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your<\/i> <\/sup>fellow elder and <\/sup>witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a <\/sup>partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, shepherd <\/sup><\/strong>the flock of God among you, exercising oversight <\/sup>not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of<\/i> God; and <\/sup>not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as <\/sup>lording it over <\/sup>those allotted to your charge, but <\/sup>proving to be <\/sup>examples to the flock. And when the Chief <\/sup>Shepherd<\/strong> appears, you will receive the <\/sup>unfading <\/sup><\/sup>crown of glory. (1 Peter 5:1-4)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Unlike what is called today sacramental priesthood<\/a>, the service of a pastor existed in the first church, but it did not indicate a special position of someone, but the duty to shepherd the Church and those performing this service were also called elders and bishops.<\/p>\n
