I really appreciate each article and every\u00a0answer to the question.<\/em> This portal is very helpful and\u00a0there are\u00a0already more than two years since I receive direction, encouragement, answer to questions and motivation on this site!<\/em> Thank you very much.<\/em> My question is about soul and spirit, what is the biblical difference between these two?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"soulIt is not easy to answer this question. Theologians are divided into two opinions. Some argue that soul and spirit is the same, and others that they are different. Why? The words \u201cspirit\u201d and \u201csoul\u201d are used in very similar ways and difference can be hardly\u00a0seen only depending on the context. The word \u201csoul\u201d is the Hebrew nefesh<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and is met 780 times in the Old Testament\u00a0and is translated into English as soul,\u00a0breathing, living creatures, life, etc.\u00a0In the\u00a0New Testament the Greek word\u00a0psuche<\/em><\/strong> is used 103 times, which again is translated into English as soul, life, etc. The word \u201cspirit\u201d is in the Hebrew Ruah<\/em><\/strong> in the\u00a0Old Testament and it means\u00a0moving air, breath, wind. In the New Testament \u201cspirit\u201d is the Greek word pneuma<\/em><\/strong> and has the same meaning as\u00a0breath or wind.<\/p>\n

What makes us believe that the spirit and soul are different? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the New Testament there are two\u00a0texts which present\u00a0the spirit separate\u00a0from soul.The first one found in Paul\u2019s First Epistle to the Thessalonians:<\/p>\n

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit<\/strong> and soul<\/strong> and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span> (1 Thessalonians 5:23)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And the second is in the Epistle to the Hebrews:<\/p>\n

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul<\/strong> and spirit<\/strong>, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.<\/span> (Hebrews 4:12)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A major difference <\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to the Scripture both\u00a0people and animals have souls.The text of Genesis 1:20-24 the word \u201ccreature\u201d is the Hebrew \u201cnefesh\u201d which means soul.<\/p>\n

Then God said, \u201cLet the waters teem with swarms of living creatures <\/strong>(nefesh<\/em>), and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.\u201d\u00a0God created the great sea monsters and every living creature <\/strong>(nefesh)<\/em>\u00a0that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.\u00a0God blessed them, saying, \u201cBe fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.\u201d\u00a0There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.\u00a0Then God said, \u201cLet the earth bring forth living creatures\u00a0<\/strong>(nefesh)<\/em>\u00a0after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind\u201d; and it was so. (Genesis 1:20-24)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So,\u00a0both\u00a0humans and animals have souls and the soul of man or animal is life.<\/p>\n

I did not find in the Bible\u00a0the spirit in animals, but only\u00a0in people especially when it takes the human relationship with God.Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.<\/span> (Romans 8:16)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to this verse, the spirit of man is one who works with the Holy Spirit received from God when we were born again<\/a>, that means when we were born of the Spirit.<\/p>\n
