I reread some chapters of the New Testament and I do not understand the verses where Jesus cursed the fig tree.<\/em><\/span> Please, explain why did Jesus do it?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Firstly, let\u2019s see \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

The text which describes this event<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

tells us the following:<\/span> <\/p>\n

And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.\u00a0Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry.\u00a0Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He said to it, \u201cNo longer shall there ever be any fruit from you.\u201d And at once the fig tree withered.\u00a0Seeing this, the disciples were amazed and asked, \u201cHow did the fig tree wither all at once?\u201d\u00a0And Jesus answered and said to them, \u201cTruly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, \u2018Be taken up and cast into the sea,\u2019 it will happen.\u00a0And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.\u201d (Matthew 21:17-22)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to\u00a0this text, Jesus gave the disciples a lesson\u00a0of faith.<\/span> The New Testament presents us\u00a0a second lesson that He had\u00a0given\u00a0His disciples before and that He reminded them\u00a0again. So,\u00a0let\u2019s see \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

What did Jesus tell the disciples\u00a0about the fig tree before?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Once, when He was\u00a0telling people about the importance of repentance\u00a0He\u00a0compared it with a fruit of a tree and He said the following words:<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.\u201d\u00a0And He began telling this parable: \u201cA man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.\u00a0And he said to the vineyard-keeper, \u2018Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?\u2019\u00a0And he answered and said to him, \u2018Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;\u00a0and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.\u2019\u201d (Luke 13:5-9)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

When Jesus cursed the fig tree, He\u00a0gave the disciples the opportunity to recall once more the previous example and\u00a0to emphasize the importance of genuine repentance.<\/span> Moreover, \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

John the Baptist used the fruit tree image to convey the same truth<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Bible tells us that:<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, \u201cYou brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?\u00a0Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;\u00a0and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, \u2018We have Abraham for our father\u2019; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.\u00a0The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.\u00a0(Matthew 3:7-10)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

How we see, in this case the fruit tree\u00a0is the image of the <\/span>true repentance that bears\u00a0righteous deeds.<\/span> <\/p>\n

God save us from the fate of those who refuse the true repentance and thus remain under the curse and punishment.<\/span> <\/p>\n
