Question:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

When a person turns to the Lord and is divorced, is she allowed to remarry with another person? <\/em><\/span>I want biblical references!<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Because each case is different from another, I can not just give a simple answer of \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d to this question.<\/span> However, God gives us principles in the Sacred Scripture that can be successfully applied to each situation.<\/span>\u00a0The most important of these principles are found in chapter 7 of Paul\u2019s first Epistle to the Corinthians.<\/span> Let us look at these principles \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

1.<\/span> <\/span>Who has the initiative of divorce?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

When a divorce happens, there is one that came with the initiative and maybe the other one\u00a0wanted\u00a0the same thing, but in most cases, the second part did not want\u00a0the divorce and did not\u00a0support this initiative.<\/span> When\u00a0he begins to address this issue, the Apostle Paul writes:<\/span> <\/p>\n

But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband<\/span><\/span> (1 Corinthians 7:10)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The verb \u201cleave\u201d is active voice and shows that the woman is the one that does\u00a0the action, i.e.\u00a0the initiative belongs to her and she leaves her her husband.<\/span> This epistle was written for a young Christian church that have\u00a0recently returned to God.<\/span> Among them were men and women with various problems in their families.<\/span> The first thing\u00a0that Apostle Paul says here is that the Christian should not\u00a0initiate divorce, and if s\/he has initiated it before returning to the Lord,\u00a0s\/he should\u00a0\u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

2.<\/span> <\/span>Try to restore the marriage if possible<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Apostle continues:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife.\u00a0(1 Corinthians 7:11)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, if the initiative of divorce\u00a0had come from the Christian\u00a0before he\u00a0repented, and the unbeliever did not remarry, but is open and wants to\u00a0restore\u00a0the family, God urges the believer to be reconciled.<\/span>\u00a0If in such a case, it is possible to be reconciled to her husband and he accepts his wife\u00a0with her faith in the Lord Jesus and wants to restore the\u00a0family and the wife, who is a believer,\u00a0does not want to be reconciled, then she should remain unmarried.<\/span> The same things applies to the man who is a believer and who\u00a0does not\u00a0want to be reconciled with the unbelieving wife whom he has divorced and who wants to keep their marriage.<\/span> <\/p>\n

3.<\/span> <\/span>If the unbeliever is remarried<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Christian is free to marry whom he wants, but in the Lord.<\/span> Moreover, if\u00a0he comes up with the idea and initiative to restore the marriage that has ended in divorce, he\u00a0will cause the former spouse to\u00a0divorce again and to leave\u00a0behind other broken hearts and another broken covenant.<\/span> The same principle applies to the woman who became a Christian and whose husband is already married.<\/span> <\/p>\n

4.<\/span><\/span> If the unbeliever does not want to restore marriage<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Another case would be when the believing wife wants to restore the marriage\u00a0and the unbelieving husband does not accept because his wife became a Christian or for any other reason. <\/span>On this case, God says:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.\u00a0And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away.\u00a0For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.\u00a0Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.\u00a0(1 Corinthians 7:12-15)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If you\u00a0did everything you could to restore the marriage and the unbelieving spouse still refuses and wants to leave you or to remain divorced, then you do not have any\u00a0other choice and you must accept this and live\u00a0in peace with him without hating him, or\u00a0preventing him from seeing his children, etc.<\/span> <\/p>\n

All along, God says in such cases \u201cthe brother or the sister are not under bondage\u201d.<\/span> What does this mean?<\/span> We find the answer in the same chapter, towards the end, where it\u00a0is used the same expression \u201cbound\u201d and also in the context of marriage:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

A wife is bound<\/strong> as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.<\/span><\/span> (1 Corinthians 7:39)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to this verse, not to be under bondage means being free\u00a0to marry whoever she wants, only in the Lord.<\/span> <\/p>\n

God give wisdom to anyone who reads these truths from the Sacred Scriptures to understand God\u2019s principles and apply them correctly to their situation.<\/span> <\/p>\n
