How should the church members\u00a0pray in the assembly?<\/em><\/span> Should they pray<\/em>\u00a0in unison, or successively\u00a0in a loud voice?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We do not find\u00a0in the<\/span>\u00a0New Testament specific commands that we were told\u00a0to pray only in one way or another one.<\/span> <\/p>\n

When addressing the subject of speaking in tongues during the worship service, the Apostle Paul writes about prayer as follows:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

Therefore let one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.\u00a0For if I pray<\/strong> in a tongue, my spirit prays<\/strong>, but my mind is unfruitful.\u00a0What is the outcome then? I will pray<\/strong> with the spirit and I will pray<\/strong> with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.\u00a0Otherwise if you bless<\/strong> in the spirit only, how will the one who fills the place of the ungifted say the \u201cAmen\u201d at your giving of thanks<\/strong>, since he does not know what you are saying?\u00a0For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not edified. (1 Corinthians 14:13-17)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

From this passage two important things stand out:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n
  • \nIt is important that other people understand what\u00a0we say in our prayer so that they could unite and say \u201cAmen\u201d.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • \nThrough one\u2019s\u00a0prayer\u00a0others are edified spiritually, if\u00a0they understand it.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Both when we pray successively in a loud voice, and when we pray in unison, it\u00a0is important to understand and unite in\u00a0our requests and thanksgiving as the Scripture says that Christians were doing in the first centuries.<\/span>\u00a0When the Apostles Peter and John were threatened by the synod and were asked not to preach about Jesus, the Scripture says that:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.\u00a0And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord<\/strong> and said, \u201cO Lord, it is You who MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM,\u00a0who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said,\u00a0\u2019WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE,\u00a0AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS?\u00a0THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND,\u00a0AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER\u00a0AGAINST THE LORD AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.\u2019\u00a0For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,\u00a0to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.\u00a0And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence,\u00a0while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.\u201d\u00a0And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.\u00a0(Acts 4:23-31)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    We must pray together,\u00a0in unison or one at a time, and especially important it is to pray in faith in obedience to the Holy Spirit.<\/span> <\/p>\n
