What does\u00a0the Bible say about the Lottery?<\/em><\/span> Is it a good or a bad practice for Christians?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lotteries are different from\u00a0a game\u00a0at a party to\u00a0national, international lotteries or Green Card Lottery in which the participants wish to gain American citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can not find in the Bible the word \u201clottery\u201d, but there are truths that apply to this practice.<\/span> The Bible tells us about \u201ccasting lots\u201d and here is a case about the soldiers who have crucified the Lord Jesus:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots<\/strong>. <\/span>(Matthew 27:35)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, the above case is different from the lotteries of today, because the soldiers divided by casting lots things they already assumed as a trophy, while lotteries today are totally different and people resort to them\u00a0hoping to gain amounts of money without working for it. <\/span>Here\u2019s what the Bible says in this regard.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Flee from the love of money<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

In most cases, the love of money is the motivation of people who systematically play in the lottery hoping that one\u00a0day that will\u00a0get rich in this way.<\/span> God says in the Bible:<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<sup class=”xref” value=”‘(A<\/a>)\u2019>But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.\u00a0For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either.\u00a0If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.\u00a0But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.\u00a0For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.\u00a0But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.\u00a0(1 Timothy 6:6-11)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I draw attention to the last verse where\u00a0God says that man is called to flee from the love of money and things that\u00a0express it and to give priority to\u00a0divine things, pursuing\u00a0righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and kindness.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Wealth gained without work does not bring prosperity<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Wise Solomon wrote this:<\/span> <\/p>\n

Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles,\u00a0but the one who gathers by labor increases it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> \u2013 (Proverbs 13:11)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I have\u00a0recently read about Callie Rogers<\/a> who\u00a0won $ 3 million at the lottery when she was 16.<\/span> Six years later she said that she spent it all on drugs, parties, exotic cars and breast plastic operations.<\/span> Only to her clothing designer she has paid $ 730,000.<\/span>\u00a0In an interview published by AOL Callie Rogers says, \u201cTo be honest, I wish I never won\u00a0in the lottery\u00a0and if I\u00a0knew\u00a0then what I know now, I\u00a0returned the money back\u201d After 6 years from the\u00a0fantastic win of\u00a0$ 3,000,000, Callie has\u00a0only $ 32,000 now.<\/span> If she worked she would not wasted the money so quickly.<\/span> <\/p>\n

In the end I want to draw the attention of\u00a0the reader that it is\u00a0not the case to have many discussions and show \u201cexcess of righteousness\u201d and come with accusations of all kinds when there are organized\u00a0lottery games on a holiday as we have seen\u00a0at Christian youth meetings.<\/span> These are\u00a0quite different things and no one organizes or participates in these lotteries with\u00a0the purposes mentioned above.<\/span> <\/p>\n
