I can not get rid of egocentrism.<\/span> It hinders me\u00a0in my relationships with God.<\/span><\/em> How to get rid of this?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nWhat is egocentrism?<\/span> <\/h4>\n

The dictionary gives us the following definition of the word:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

Egocentrism<\/a> \u2013 attempting to get personal recognition for yourself (especially by unacceptable means); preoccupation with self and insensitivity to others.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nHumility \u2013 the opposite of egocentrism<\/span> <\/h4>\n

In the Epistle to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul has devoted\u00a0the whole chapter 2 to\u00a0this topic and it begins so:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,\u00a0make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.\u00a0Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;\u00a0do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(Philippians 2:1-4)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to these verses, not to be egocentric one must:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n
  • \ndo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>It depends on one\u2019s\u00a0motivation and God teaches us not to do anything to assert ourselves before\u00a0others<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • \nregard one another as more important than yourselves, and to be able to do this\u00a0<\/span>\u2026<\/span> <\/li>\n
  • do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others, who surround\u00a0you.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    But, what is it required to be able to do this?<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \nTo have the mind of Christ<\/span> <\/h4>\n

    This is what the\u00a0Apostle Paul says further on\u00a0in chapter 2 of the Epistle to the Philippians:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,\u00a0who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,\u00a0but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.\u00a0Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.\u00a0For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,\u00a0so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,\u00a0and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.\u00a0(Philippians 2:5-11)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    It is necessary to have the mind of Christ in\u00a0the heart, that\u00a0means His attitude, because he was not egocentric, even if He was placed\u00a0by His Father in the center of the universe and\u00a0one day every knee will bow down before Him of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue will confess that He is Lord.<\/span> <\/p>\n

    Learn from people who have the mind of Christ and live for others.<\/span>\u00a0In the same chapter 2 the Apostle Paul presents the example of two people who were not egocentric.<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \nThe example of Timothy<\/span> <\/h4>\n

    He was a young man\u00a0who believed wholeheartedly in the Lord Jesus and has dedicated his life to serving others in the Gospel.<\/span> Paul writes thus about him:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n

    But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition.\u00a0For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.\u00a0For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.\u00a0But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.\u00a0Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me;\u00a0and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(Philippians 2:19-24)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Although most people\u00a0of his time were egocentric, because they were seeking after their own interests and not\u00a0those of Christ, he, Timothy, as a child with\u00a0his father, worked as a slave along with Paul for the furtherance\u00a0of the Gospel.<\/span> Learn from this young man as he has learned from his teacher Paul.<\/span> <\/p>\n

    The Apostle tells us further\u00a0 \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

    The example of Epaphroditus<\/span><\/h4>\n

    When the apostle was in prison in Rome and the church\u00a0of Philippi decided to send him an aid, Epaphroditus offered himself to\u00a0this job that was not easy at all\u00a0to take the aid from Philippi to Rome to Paul.<\/span> The task was not easy and on the way he got sick to death.<\/span> But, let us\u00a0better read what\u00a0Paul himself wrote\u00a0to Philippians about Epaphroditus:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n

    <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need;\u00a0because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick.\u00a0For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.\u00a0Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly so that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you.\u00a0Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard;\u00a0because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me.\u00a0(Philippians 2:25-30)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    Epaphroditus was not egocentric.<\/span> Otherwise, he\u00a0would have stayed home to do his job.<\/span>\u00a0But he always thought at the benefits of others and felt with them.<\/span>\u00a0Because\u00a0he thought of\u00a0Paul, he\u00a0chose to risk his life\u00a0to get with the aid\u00a0to Rome.<\/span> <\/p>\n

    Lord Jesus help us to learn from such people who understood that the essence of faith in God is serving others and giving themselves for others.<\/span> <\/p>\n
