Please advise me regarding\u00a0the situations when I hear that there are some\u00a0in the church that\u00a0gossip about me, spread rumors and do not approach me to tell me anything.<\/em><\/span>Then, I\u00a0hear that in Christian circles, sometimes in my presence, they\u00a0discuss about someone who is not\u00a0present.<\/em><\/span> I understand that this\u00a0is not\u00a0good\u00a0and I do\u00a0not participate in such discussions. <\/em><\/span>Is it necessary to go to the persons that\u00a0talk\u00a0behind my back and\u00a0ask them why they do so?<\/em><\/span> How to behave\u00a0when they are discussing about another person in my presence?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

To better understand the subject, let\u2019s define \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

What is gossip?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Cambridge Dictionary, gossip<\/a>\u00a0means:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

A conversation or reports about other people\u2019s private lives which might be unkind, disapproving or not true<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the context of our subject, when we say \u201cgossip\u201d we refer to situations when there are spoken evil and untrue things in order to slander, to defame, to revile\u00a0and ruin the good name of someone.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Gossip (defamation) is a serious sin with eternal consequences<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

In the Epistle to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul wrote:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/sup>Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,\u00a0nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers,<\/strong> nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.<\/strong>\u00a0(1 Corinthians 6:9-10)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Warning!<\/span> Gossip is placed on the same scale with fornication, idolatry, sexual perversions, theft, etc. a<\/span>nd if someone goes to church and thinks he is a good believer, but practices gossip (defamation), let him\u00a0no longer deceive himself and\u00a0repent. <\/span>Otherwise, he will not inherit the kingdom of God.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Not to be disturbed by the unfounded gossip of the unbelievers<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

When describing the humanity, Apostle Paul says:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,\u00a0being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips<\/strong>,\u00a0slanderers<\/strong>, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,\u00a0without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;\u00a0and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.\u00a0(Romans 1:28-32)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Because this\u00a0is part of the sinful state of slavery in which\u00a0unbelievers are, we should not be upset for personal harms that we have from them without reason.<\/span> Moreover,\u00a0the Scripture tells us to continuously equip by studying God\u2019s Word and \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

\u2026. sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;\u00a0and keep a good conscience so that in<\/strong> the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame<\/strong>.\u00a0For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.\u00a0<\/span>(1 Peter 3:15-17)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Let\u2019s be careful not to give anyone opportunity to stumble and thus to be slandered.<\/span>\u00a0The Apostle Paul wrote about himself and about the team he was working with\u00a0in the Gospel:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> (2 Corinthians 6:3)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And if we are discredited and slandered falsely, let us have the attitude of the Apostle who said:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults<\/strong>, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ\u2019s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.<\/span><\/span> (2 Corinthians 12:10)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Moreover, enough about this because the question was \u2026<\/span> <\/p>\n

What to do when you hear that you are maligned in the Church?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

If someone has spoken\u00a0about you behind your back, you could not hear unless\u00a0someone came to you to send these words.<\/span> Firstly ask the person who told you if he or she\u00a0had confronted the one who was gossiping you.<\/span>\u00a0If not, then ask him\u00a0if he\u00a0wants to confront that person,\u00a0as one who had witnessed the\u00a0defamation.<\/span> If one who has\u00a0gossiped\u00a0about you repents, he will\u00a0necessarily come and ask forgiveness from you.<\/span> If he does not repent, you will have to go together with the witness\u00a0who has heard him\u00a0defaming you\u00a0and confront him\u00a0together.<\/span> If he does not\u00a0repent this time, you must ask the pastor to intervene.<\/span> And if he\u00a0does not listen to the\u00a0pastor, he will have to be disciplined, according to what\u00a0the Lord Jesus said:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.\u00a0But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.\u00a0If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(Matthew 18:15-17)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So that the whole church may not be affected by the sin of defamation, the Scripture says very clearly that this discipline must be urgently applied to the person who has gossiped:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is<\/strong> an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler\u2013not even to eat with such a one.<\/strong>\u00a0For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church?\u00a0But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES<\/strong>. (1 Corinthians 5:11-13)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What to do when you become a witness of defamation?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Do not hurry to\u00a0qualify\u00a0in the beginning as defamation. <\/span>Remember that defamation is when untrue things are spoken\u00a0in order to discredit someone, or to harm someone.<\/span> If bad deeds of someone are recalled, do not hurry\u00a0to qualify this as defamation or\u00a0gossip because maybe the person who has started the discussion wants\u00a0to find a solution and help the one who has fallen into sin.<\/span> If you have doubts, it is good in the beginning to ask the brother or the sister who is talking to you why he is telling you these things\u00a0and if he is\u00a0ready to say the same things to the person who has sinned, if he\u00a0needs to be confronted.<\/span> <\/p>\n

Let us realize the seriousness of the sin of defamation, to watch\u00a0and\u00a0realize the danger that it can bring upon the Church of Christ if not confronted\u00a0in time.<\/span> <\/p>\n
