When do we need to treat a brother or a sister as a Gentile and a tax-collector? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Lord Jesus said:<\/p>\n

If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.\u00a0But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.\u00a0If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. <\/span>(Matthew 18:15-17)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to this passage, we can treat someone who is called \u201cChristian\u201d as a tax-collector and a Gentile only after we ourselves confronted him, then with witnesses and then, after being condemned by the whole Church for the fact that he\u00a0does not want to listen, to repent and turn from sin in which he lives. To understand how to behave with brothers and sisters who insist to live in sin, we must see \u2026<\/p>\n

How were tax-collectors and Gentiles approached in Lord Jesus\u2019 time? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

When Lord Jesus lived and ministered on earth, Judea was under Roman authority. The latter were looking for those from the people of Israel who were deprived of principles and greedy\u00a0of wealth, and\u00a0recruited these people to collect heavy taxes imposed on Israel. In addition to collecting taxes, that were very heavy, tax-collectors were taking\u00a0more to gather wealth for them. Therefore, they were hated a lot by\u00a0people.<\/p>\n

The Pharisees, on the other hand, were the party that claimed to be the most faithful of the Old Testament Law, but have added many human\u00a0commandments\u00a0to this law and\u00a0imposed\u00a0them\u00a0on people. Other Jews believed that Pharisees\u00a0were the most faithful and took as fact what the Pharisees were saying or doing. Let\u2019s see now some examples from Scripture that will show us how\u00a0Pharisees and\u00a0the nation approached\u00a0tax-collectors and\u00a0sinners.<\/p>\n

When Jesus entered\u00a0the house of\u00a0Levi, the tax-collector,\u00a0which later became the Apostle Matthew \u2026<\/p>\n

The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, \u201cWhy do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?\u201d <\/span> (Luke 5:30)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the Pharisees would never allow themselves\u00a0to eat and drink with tax collectors\u00a0and sinners.<\/p>\n

The evangelist Luke tells us the following:<\/p>\n

Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him.\u00a0Both the Pharisees and the scribes began to grumble, saying, \u201cThis man receives sinners and eats with them.\u201d (<\/span>Luke 15:1-2)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to this verse, it appears that Pharisees\u00a0did not even\u00a0allow themselves to\u00a0sit in the same place together\u00a0with tax collectors\u00a0and sinners.<\/p>\n

Zaccheus, the tax collector was so\u00a0eager to listen to the\u00a0teaching of the Lord Jesus about salvation that\u00a0he overlooked\u00a0the contempt from\u00a0people and\u00a0any other shame and he climbed up into a sycamore tree, so that\u00a0he might see Jesus when He passed by. Lord Jesus looked at the\u00a0state of his heart and decided to stop at his home.<\/p>\n

When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, \u201cHe has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.\u201d <\/span>(Luke 19:7)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As you see, this time not only the Pharisees, but all present there\u00a0were grumbling and\u00a0judging Jesus\u00a0for the fact that He went to be a guest\u00a0of a tax collector, whom they called\u00a0a sinner. This shows us that they would have never done so.<\/p>\n

Why Lord Jesus received tax collectors\u00a0and sinners, but He asks us\u00a0to take\u00a0attitude towards those who insist to live in sin? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Because tax collectors\u00a0and sinners, about which\u00a0is written in the Gospels came to Jesus to receive salvation and repented from their hearts, their lives\u00a0were changed\u00a0and they no longer lived in sin and hypocrisy. When Jesus came into the house of Zaccheus, here\u2019s what happened:<\/p>\n

Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, \u201cBehold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.\u201d<\/span> (Luke 19:8)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do you see how this man repented and how much was\u00a0his life\u00a0transformed by faith in Lord Jesus? He did not continue to live in sin\u00a0and those who insist on living sinfully\u00a0and try to consider or present themselves as\u00a0\u201dbrothers\u201d or \u201csisters\u201d, Lord Jesus says that we must address them as\u00a0Pharisees and all the people addressed tax collectors and\u00a0sinners in the biblical passages cited above.<\/p>\n

The case of Corinth sheds\u00a0more light <\/strong><\/h2>\n

Being\u00a0at a distance, the Apostle Paul heard terrible news about a case of incest that happened in the church of Corinth and he wrote them:<\/p>\n

It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father\u2019s wife. <\/span>(1 Corinthians 5:1)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Apostle immediately took up an\u00a0attitude, wrote the I Epistle to the Corinthians\u00a0and he asked them to take up attitude urgently\u00a0and remove from their midst\u00a0the\u00a0immoral man\u00a0who called and considered himself\u00a0a \u201cbrother\u201d:<\/p>\n

You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst.\u00a0For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.\u00a0In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,\u00a0I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. (1 Corinthians 5:2-5)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Towards the end of the chapter, he tells Christians how to treat him\u00a0once he was expelled from the Church:<\/p>\n

I wrote you in my letter not to associate<\/strong> with immoral people;\u00a0I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.\u00a0But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler\u2013not even to eat with such<\/strong> a one.<\/strong> (1 Corinthians 5:9-11)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, what does it mean to treat the\u00a0\u201dbrother\u201d or the \u201csister\u201d who were excluded from the Church as a Gentile or a tax collector? To not associate\u00a0with them. But, remember, this attitude may be taken only after you yourself have confronted him, then, if he does not correct,\u00a0take with you witnesses and if\u00a0he does not correct this time, tell\u00a0the Church about him. Only after being removed from the Church (and this means to be delivered to\u00a0Satan) you should not have any dealings with him or her.<\/p>\n

It is not easy to do so and is sad to see how people are afraid to confront the man who lives in sins, which they know, and if it comes to be confronted and expelled from the Church, all those who have been afraid to confront him continue to have dealings\u00a0with him. If we care and we love those who call themselves \u201cbrothers\u201d or \u201csisters\u201d we will confront them according to the\u00a0Scripture,\u00a0because we love them and\u00a0we want the salvation of\u00a0their soul. God help us so.<\/p>\n
