I would like very much for you to post, with explanations, something about the engagements made in the Lord and then broken off, because there are more young people whom I\u00a0see\u00a0practicing it.<\/em> What does the Bible say across this subject and what should\u00a0the church\u2019s attitude be\u00a0towards these young people?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the article What is engagement? <\/a>I presented the following definition:<\/p>\n

The word from the Old Testament translated \u201cengagement\u201d is the Hebrew \u201caras\u201d, that\u00a0means an engagement to marry, or\u00a0to be bound with a promise to marry someone.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Only one intention of breaking off the engagement <\/strong><\/h2>\n

I do not remember any case in the\u00a0Bible about breaking\u00a0the engagement, but there is one where the groom had this intention:<\/p>\n

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed<\/strong> to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.\u00a0But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, \u201cJoseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife<\/strong>; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.\u201d (<\/span>Matthew 1:18-21)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From this text it is clear that Joseph, until he learned from Whom\u00a0was Mary pregnant, he\u00a0had a serious reason to break\u00a0the engagement. It is also mentioned here\u00a0that he did not want to disgrace her, and\u00a0decided to send her away secretly. So, normally, if someone broke off\u00a0the engagement,\u00a0it\u00a0brought\u00a0shame on the\u00a0one or both of the betrothed. So it is today, dissolving, or breaking the engagement brings\u00a0shame and the one who is rejected and abandoned experiences it most painfully. In fact, parents, siblings and relatives of the betrothed experience\u00a0that\u00a0shame as well.<\/p>\n

It is a harm to the heavenly image <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Apostle Paul wrote to Christians from Corinth as follows:<\/p>\n

For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed <\/strong>you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.\u00a0But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.\u00a0(II Corinthians 11:2-3)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the relationship that is now between the Church and Christ is that of a pure virgin betrothed\u00a0to a man. Can Christ renounce his fiancee who is the Church? Can the Church go away\u00a0from the purity and faithfulness to Christ and thus break off the engagement? No way! Christians who break the\u00a0engagement should think that they harm this heavenly image and by their deeds the Name of God will\u00a0be spoken evil\u00a0before men.<\/p>\n

What\u00a0should the Church do to those who break off\u00a0the engagement? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

To study the\u00a0causes and take appropriate attitude towards the guilty one. I remember one case when a young leader in the Church had broken the engagement\u00a0without giving explanations and thus\u00a0dishonoring the\u00a0girl.\u00a0As I recall, he was put on observation and removed from any leadership position because he was no longer\u00a0an example worthy\u00a0to follow.<\/p>\n
