How to understand the passage from the Gospel of Matthew 10:40-42?<\/em><\/span> How to apply it to my life?<\/em><\/span> As a future minister\u00a0of the church I\u00a0need to know how to answer to those\u00a0who will ask me this question. <\/em><\/span>What does it mean to give in the name of a disciple?<\/em><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThe text<\/span> <\/h4>\n

Let\u2019s see firstly\u00a0the\u00a0passage to which the reference is made:<\/span> <\/p>\n

\n

He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.\u00a0He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet\u2019s reward; and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man\u2019s reward.\u00a0And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(Matthew 10:40-42)(NASB)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThe context<\/span> <\/h4>\n

This passage\u00a0had been\u00a0told by the Lord Jesus at the end of a message to the 12 apostles before He sent them to preach the Gospel to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.<\/span> The beginning of chapter 10\u00a0tells us about this and then it is written\u00a0this message of the Lord\u00a0Jesus addressed to the apostles.<\/span> Even at the outset He told them\u00a0not to worry about their material needs for this mission because \u201cthe worker is worthy of his support\u201d.<\/span> He warned them about the problems and persecution that awaits them\u00a0on the way and that things will end up there that some of His disciples will be put\u00a0to death even by their loved ones.<\/span> So, the words told in\u00a0verses\u00a040-42 are in the context of sending\u00a0those 12 apostles to mission.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nThe reward of those who will receive the disciples<\/span> <\/h4>\n

The emphasis in this passage is on the reward of those who will\u00a0receive the disciples of the Lord Jesus, that they will have a reward from the Lord Jesus and from God, because the one who receives the disciples,\u00a0receives Jesus and he who receives Jesus Christ, receives God who has sent Him.<\/span> <\/p>\n

\nLittle ones are the disciples<\/span> <\/h4>\n

For some who read the text is not clear who are these little ones whom Jesus talks about.<\/span> They are the disciples\u00a0and here is the evidence in this regard:<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \nLord Jesus was talking to those\u00a012 when He said \u201cone of these little ones\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0So, He was addressing them, otherwise He would have said, \u201cthose little ones\u201d, or \u201cto those little ones\u201d.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  2. \nIn this context He does not speak about\u00a0anyone else, other little ones\u00a0or children.<\/span> <\/li>\n
  3. \nIn verses 41 and 42 Lord Jesus uses the\u00a0the same\u00a0analogy but He wants to show that the reward is different.<\/span> He says that \u201che who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet\u2019s reward; and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man\u2019s reward\u201d and, following the same logic and order He says \u201cwhoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward\u201d.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \nWhat does it mean to give in the name of a disciple?<\/span> <\/h4>\n

    To\u00a0give him because he\u00a0is the disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ and because he fulfills\u00a0the command and the mission to which\u00a0Jesus sent him to preach the Gospel.<\/span> <\/p>\n

    \nThe practical application<\/span> <\/h4>\n

    There would be\u00a0several applications, but most important are these two:<\/span> <\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \nNothing should prevent you from\u00a0the ministry to\u00a0which God has called you and be sure not to leave the ministry of the Gospel because of material needs.<\/span> Never\u00a0forget\u00a0\u201dthe worker is worthy of his support\u201d and that the Savior\u00a0will fulfill your\u00a0needs and He\u00a0will give you a great reward at His\u00a0coming.<\/span> <\/li>\n
    2. \nTo look after other disciples of the Lord Jesus who fulfill His command and\u00a0go to preach the Gospel with devotion.<\/span> When they come to church that you will shepherd\u00a0or to your home, receive\u00a0them\u00a0in a way\u00a0worthy of God and help them in their work with what you can, without waiting for something from them instead.<\/span> Your reward will be from God and from the Lord Jesus who said that even for a glass of water given to those who\u00a0work in the Gospel you will not lose the reward.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
