A heated dispute has been stirred up lately on www.moldovacrestina.md\u00a0portal about the importance of the holy traditions\u00a0and the\u00a0Holy Scripture. All peoples and even all families have beautiful traditions.\u00a0But, when traditions become a religion, they are extremely dangerous for the salvation of our souls.\u00a0Following the discussions, I was motivated to write\u00a0this article, where I will present\u00a0five truths about religious tradition from the Holy Scriptures.<\/p>\n
Lord Jesus Christ said it when He had a dispute\u00a0with the Pharisees, that\u00a0was written\u00a0by the evangelists Mark and Matthew.I will quote the detailed version described in the Gospel of Matthew:<\/p>\n
The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem,\u00a0and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.\u00a0(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders;\u00a0and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.)\u00a0The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, \u201cWhy do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?\u201d\u00a0And He said to them, \u201cRightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: \u2018THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.\u00a0\u2019BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.\u2019\u00a0Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0He was also saying to them, \u201cYou are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.<\/strong>\u00a0For Moses said, \u2018HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER\u2019; and, \u2018HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH\u2019;\u00a0but you say, \u2018If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),\u2019\u00a0you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;\u00a0thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down<\/strong>; and you do many things such as that.\u201d (Gospel of Mark 7:1-13)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
It does not mean\u00a0that all human traditions are bad, but the Lord Jesus makes a clear distinction between human traditions and the\u00a0commandments of God.<\/p>\n
2.<\/strong><\/span> Religious tradition is the product of human mind<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Sometimes, maybe having sincere, but totally wrong\u00a0wishes, people want to be more holy than God requires.\u00a0As is the case\u00a0from the Gospel quoted\u00a0above.\u00a0Through Moses, after leaving Egypt, God gave Israel specific commands and they ask people to observe hygiene and if they touched a dead body or unclean things, to wash and be considered unclean until evening.You can read more details in chapters 15 and 19 of the book of Leviticus and see that every time God spoke\u00a0about cases when\u00a0the man touched a certain\u00a0unclean thing.\u00a0Pharisees and elders who\u00a0handed down\u00a0the tradition to which Jesus referred,\u00a0went further and arguing that\u00a0man can touch something unclean without knowing, established commands\u00a0regarding\u00a0many and complicated cleaning procedures and raised them to the level of religion.<\/p>\n
3.<\/strong><\/span> Religious tradition is the result of invalidating God\u2019s command<\/strong><\/h2>\n
When people do not study the Scriptures, they\u00a0begin to make their own rules and traditions, thus making their own religion.\u00a0If a church or a house\u00a0does not study the Scriptures\u00a0to be lived,\u00a0roots of the traditions will soon replace God\u2019s Word in\u00a0that church or house.<\/p>\n
4.<\/strong><\/span> Religious tradition<\/strong> abolishes the commandment of God<\/strong><\/h2>\n
It is difficult to understand this, but people who consider themselves religious make up\u00a0laws and traditions\u00a0and they\u00a0care more about them than about\u00a0God\u2019s command.I was astonished\u00a0once, when coming into a church, I was asked to take my wedding ring off the finger,\u00a0upon the pretext that it is sinful to be worn, and then I found that such a large church as they were did not offer any financial support to their pastor.\u00a0So, they invented a human tradition established by them or their elders and\u00a0held a lot to it\u00a0and invalidated\u00a0the commandment of God which says clearly:<\/p>\n
The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him.<\/span> (Galatians 6:6)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
5.<\/strong><\/span> Religious tradition cultivates hypocrisy<\/strong><\/h2>\n
The last verses of chapter 6 of the Gospel of Mark tells\u00a0the following:<\/p>\n
When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.\u00a0When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,\u00a0and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.\u00a0Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured. <\/span>(Mark 6:53-56)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So, everyone came to be healed and were amazed by the power of God that was in Him.But the Pharisees and scribes came to Jerusalem to catch\u00a0Jesus in the things that violated the tradition of the elders and to\u00a0accuse and condemn Him.\u00a0Is not this wickedness and hypocrisy?Because\u00a0they could not find\u00a0anything, they used the opportunity when\u00a0they saw the disciples of Christ who were eating with unwashed hands as their tradition demanded.In fact, it was only a pretext, but the real reason was their malice and envy they had to Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n
In the Epistle addressed to the Christians\u00a0from the city of Colosse, the apostle Paul wrote this:<\/p>\n
See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.\u00a0<\/strong>For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,\u00a0and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority.<\/span>\u00a0(Colossians 2:8-10)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The authors of human traditions and the\u00a0fierce supporters of\u00a0keeping them, often resort to logic and philosophical speculation\u00a0to impose\u00a0these traditions\u00a0on others.Therefore, the Word of God tells us to watch and to be careful that\u00a0no one takes us captive\u00a0with such speculations and to know\u00a0well that we have everything in Christ.Therefore, we shall\u00a0study\u00a0God\u2019s word persistently as\u00a0written on the pages of the Holy Scriptures and live according to God\u2019s commandments.<\/p>\n
