I have a question about the faith and veneration at a\u00a0very high level\u00a0the Orthodox Christians do with regard to Mary, the mother of Jesus. <\/i>Why do\u00a0they\u00a0consider\u00a0that she was\u00a0virgin until death and that she rose from the dead and ascended to heaven.<\/i> Why do they consider that she had no children and that Jesus\u2019 brothers were either disciples or children of Joseph from his first marriage after which\u00a0he remained a widower?<\/i> After all, in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke there are mentioned\u00a0the moments\u00a0when the brothers together with Mary came to Jesus to call Him out?<\/i> And how do they venerate\u00a0the \u201cMother of the Lord\u201d almost like God, when the Old Testament says that God is a\u00a0jealous One and He does not want His glory to be given to anyone?<\/i> Why is it not written very exactly in the Bible if Mary had other children besides Jesus or not? <\/em>Thanks in advance for your response which I will wait with great pleasure.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
After the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus to heaven many\u00a0started to write different works, that\u00a0claimed to be holy writings.But in the Church, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, there were recognized as inspired by God only 27 canonical books that were included in the New Testament.In addition, there\u00a0were many writings which\u00a0came into conflict with the canonical books because\u00a0of\u00a0their content. These writings were called \u201capocrypha\u201d, i.e.\u00a0hidden writings.They have given rise to many heresies and discussions during the entire history of the Christian Church.Recently, Dan Brown has used some of these writings and wrote the book \u201cDaVinci\u2019s Code\u201d to attack the Christian faith.<\/p>\n
True Christians, who have chosen to follow the healthy\u00a0doctrine of Jesus Christ, have set as the foundation of their faith the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments.Therefore, I will\u00a0answer your question only based on what is\u00a0written in the Scripture, more specifically in the New Testament, where there are stories about Mary, the mother of Jesus.<\/p>\n
Was Mary\u00a0ever-virgin?<\/h2>\n
The term \u201cever-virgin\u201d means that Mary remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus Christ just as\u00a0she was a virgin until His birth and this also implies that she has\u00a0never have\u00a0intimate relations with her husband Joseph and she did not give birth to other children. Let\u2019s see what the Bible says in this regard.<\/p>\n
We find the first story in the Gospel of Matthew:<\/p>\n
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.<\/strong>\u00a0And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.\u00a0But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, \u201cJoseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.\u201d\u00a0Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:\u00a0\u201dBEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,\u201d which translated means, \u201cGOD WITH US.\u201d\u00a0And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,\u00a0but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son<\/strong>; and he called His name Jesus. So, Mary was pregnant before\u00a0she live with Joseph, that is before\u00a0she had intimate relations with him and Joseph kept her virgin\u00a0until she gave birth to a Son.<\/p>\n
Has\u00a0Mary given birth to\u00a0other children after Jesus?<\/h2>\n
Also in the Gospel of Matthew, we are told the following:<\/p>\n
He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, \u201cWhere did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?\u00a0Is not this the carpenter\u2019s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?\u00a0And His sisters, are they not all with us?<\/strong> Where then did this man get all these things?\u201d (Matthew 13:54-56)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So, Jesus had brothers and sisters and\u00a0the Scripture does not say that it was something unusual in their family, that Joseph would have been married before, that brothers of Jesus were his children from his first marriage, or that they were the cousins of Jesus.Instead, people saw in Jesus and in their family nothing unusual\u00a0than others. That is why they were\u00a0astonished at his doctrine.<\/p>\n
About the resurrection and ascension of Virgin Mary<\/h2>\n
There is no specific indication about such events, as the\u00a0resurrection and ascension of Mary in the New Testament.<\/p>\n
How have the\u00a0Apostles acted?<\/h2>\n
In the New Testament writings we do not\u00a0find the apostles or the early church to\u00a0venerate the Mother of the Lord, or to say that\u00a0her\u00a0person\u00a0was a substantial part of their worship.If\u00a0it were so, they could not overlook this practice that is widespread today.<\/p>\n
Virgin Mary urges\u00a0us to obey her Son<\/h2>\n
When she was at the wedding\u00a0in Cana and the wine gave up, Jesus\u2019 mother told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do.Certainly that it remains her most important message for all people of all times.To do our utmost\u00a0to know the Lord Jesus and do everything He says.God help us so.<\/p>\n
