The Biblical text<\/h2>\n

The words were said by the Lord Jesus in the famous Sermon on the Mount and they are\u00a0the following:<\/p>\n

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.\u00a0For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. <\/span>(Matthew 7:13-14) (NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Context is the key to understanding<\/h2>\n

Throughout the centuries, many took\u00a0these verses out of context and used them to introduce different kind of human laws and commandments which led to extreme legalism, but in reality\u00a0are just the opposite to the words of the Lord Jesus. To understand these verses we\u00a0must look at the whole sermon\u00a0of the Lord\u00a0Jesus, written in chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew.\u00a0Maybe it would be\u00a0better to read this\u00a0passage before you continue reading this article, or read it after reading the article.<\/p>\n

Pay attention to the key verse<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0key verse of the Sermon on the Mount is closely related to understanding the truth about the \u201cnarrow way\u201d and \u201csmall gate\u201d and it is the\u00a0following:<\/p>\n

For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.<\/span> (Matthew 5:20)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During this\u00a0sermon of the mount, the Lord Jesus has contrasted the righteousness\u00a0of the scribes and Pharisees\u00a0with the righteousness of God.<\/p>\n

How have some \u201cnarrowed\u201d\u00a0the narrow way?<\/h2>\n

Pharisees were the\u00a0narrowest religious party\u00a0of the time of our Lord Jesus Christ, and because of their zeal for holiness (but actually to make themselves conspicuous\u00a0before others) they added 600 more commandments to the Word\u00a0written by God in the Old Testament. To understand how they \u201cnarrowed\u201d\u00a0this way, I\u00a0give you an example.\u00a0The fourth of the 10 commandments\u00a0says to work six days and the seventh day to rest. But the Pharisees\u00a0added many commandments, such as not to\u00a0walk more than a certain number of steps in the Sabbath day and not to eat the eggs that the hen laid on this day, because in their view, the hen\u00a0tired and so it sinned (as if\u00a0the Law was given to hens\u00a0and not to\u00a0men).\u00a0At first glance, the way they follow\u00a0seems to be the narrowest way\u00a0and it can not be narrower. But in fact, the Lord Jesus says \u2026<\/p>\n

Pharisees<\/span>\u00a0left God\u2019s commandment<\/h2>\n

Lord Jesus had many confrontations with the Pharisees about this problem and\u00a0once, when they accused Him\u00a0that His\u00a0disciples were eating with unwashed hands, the Savior said that:<\/p>\n

And He said to them, \u201cRightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:\u00a0THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,\u00a0BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.\u00a0BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,\u00a0TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.\u2019\u00a0Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.\u201d He was also saying to them, \u201cYou are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.\u00a0For Moses said, \u2018HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER\u2019; and, \u2018HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH\u2019;\u00a0but you say, \u2018If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),\u2019\u00a0you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;\u00a0thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.\u201d (Mark 7:6-13)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pharisees\u00a0have left the narrow\u00a0way when they set aside\u00a0the Word of God through their tradition.<\/p>\n

The small\u00a0gate and the narrow\u00a0way is living according to the Word of God<\/h2>\n

It is also the Sermon on the Mount, when the Lord Jesus said that God\u2019s righteousness is the condition\u00a0to enter into the kingdom of heaven and this is the fulfillment of the Word of God left on the Holy Scriptures pages:<\/p>\n

Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.\u00a0For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.\u00a0Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.\u00a0For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.\u00a0(Matthew 5:17-20)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What is your attitude towards God\u2019s Word? How much time do you\u00a0spend studying it?\u00a0How do you\u00a0apply the Word in your life?\u00a0What do you\u00a0communicate to others\u00a0from the Holy Scriptures?\u00a0What does the answer to all these questions tell you? Do you go on the narrow\u00a0way or not?<\/p>\n
