In this article I come to respond to the following message that I have received from a reader of the portal www.moldovacrestina.net:<\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/em> absolutely disagree with the advice you give\u00a0to those who want to marry unbelievers.<\/em>\u00a0Here\u2019s what the Bible says: \u201cBut to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.\u00a0And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away.\u00a0For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.\u00a0Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace.\u00a0For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?\u00a0Only, as the Lord has assigned to each one, as God has called each, in this manner let him walk And so I direct in all the churches.\u00a0Was any man called when he was already circumcised? He is not to become uncircumcised. Has anyone been called in uncircumcision? He is not to be circumcised.\u00a0Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God.\u00a0Each man must remain in that condition in which he was called.\u00a0Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.\u00a0For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord\u2019s freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ\u2019s slave.\u00a0You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The passage refers to those already married<\/span><\/h2>\n

The biblical passage quoted by the author of the\u00a0message is found in chapter 7 of Paul\u2019s I Epistle to the Corinthians\u00a0and these are verses 12 to 23.<\/span> The apostle begins to address this issue two verses before and he says:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But to the married<\/strong> I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband\u00a0(but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife. (1 Corinthians 7:10-11)(NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I want to draw the reader\u2019s attention at\u00a0the\u00a0present tense of the verb \u201cto be\u201d used here, namely, it is written: \u201cthose who are married\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0Then, it is written in the text cited by the author himself:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has<\/strong> a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her.\u00a0And a woman who has<\/strong> an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away.\u00a0(1 Corinthians 7:12-13)(NASB)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So, the brother already has (present tense)\u00a0a wife, who is an unbeliever, and the woman\u00a0already has (present tense)\u00a0an unbelieving husband.<\/span> It is absolutely clear and evident that the Apostle writes\u00a0here to those who became Christians being\u00a0already married and had entered into the\u00a0covenant of\u00a0marriage when they were\u00a0still unbelievers.<\/span> They are told\u00a0to keep their marriage if the unbeliever consents this.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Only in the Lord<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the same chapter 7 of I Corinthians, God\u2019s Word repeats once again\u00a0that the believer can marry only another believing person, and he\u00a0writes this in the end of the chapter:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.<\/strong> (1 Corinthians 7:39)(NASB)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

God\u2019s Word is clear and it does not have\u00a0two meanings.<\/span> The Christian is\u00a0free to be married to whom s\/he wishes, only in the Lord,\u00a0only to a person who is part of the same covenant with the Lord Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n
