Is<\/span> it essential for<\/span> relatives to<\/span> be<\/span> dressed in<\/span> black clothes at the<\/span> funeral of<\/span> a<\/span> close family member<\/span><\/span><\/span>?<\/span> Why?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many times<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> the clothes<\/span> we wear<\/span> are meant<\/span> to convey a message<\/span> and this is<\/span> true for<\/span> every nation<\/span> and<\/span> every culture.<\/span> In<\/span> Christian countries<\/span> was established<\/span> as<\/span> a custom<\/span> to wear<\/span> black clothes<\/span>, which<\/span> transmits<\/span> to all<\/span> the people around<\/span> the message<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> that the person who<\/span> is<\/span> dressed in black<\/span> is in a<\/span> period of<\/span> mourning.<\/span> Not<\/span> wearing<\/span> black clothes<\/span> will<\/span> be interpreted by<\/span> people<\/span> as if<\/span> you were<\/span> indifferent<\/span> to the person or even<\/span>,<\/span> one can<\/span> say that<\/span> you enjoyed<\/span> his or her<\/span> death<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where do black clothes come <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>from? <\/span>In ancient Rome there was customary at the death of a loved ones to wear toga pulla<\/em>, a dark coat. <\/span>We don’t have mentioned attempts by Christians to change this habit, so it persisted throughout the Middle Ages and remained until today. <\/span>But there were some unsuccessful attempts to change the color of the\u00a0mourning clothes in<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> white by<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> the royalty. <\/span>Moreover, Hindus have white mourning clothes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I know there are<\/span> some Christians<\/span> who say<\/span> that we should not<\/span> mourn the death<\/span> of the saints<\/span>, because they<\/span> went to<\/span> the kingdom of heaven<\/span> which<\/span> is infinitely<\/span> better.<\/span> It may sound<\/span> good and<\/span> spiritual<\/span>, but<\/span> we stiil mourn the <\/span>death of<\/span> the saints<\/span>, because<\/span> we are separated from<\/span> them<\/span> for a<\/span> while,<\/span> until we<\/span> get to<\/span> see them again<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among<\/span> the commandments<\/span> of<\/span> God<\/span> to the priests<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the Old<\/span> Testament there is<\/span> this one:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then the L<\/span>ord<\/span><\/span> said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: <\/span><\/span> ‘No one shall defile himself for a <\/span>dead<\/span><\/span> person among his people, <\/span><\/span>except for his relatives who are nearest to him, his mother and his father and his son and his daughter and his brother, <\/span><\/span>also for his virgin sister, who is near to him because she has had no husband; for her he may defile himself. <\/span><\/span>He shall not defile himself as a relative by marriage among his people, and so profane himself. <\/span><\/span>They shall not make any baldness on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts in their flesh. <\/span><\/span>They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, for they present the offerings by fire to the L<\/span>ord<\/span><\/span>, the food of their God; so they shall be holy. (Leviticus 21:1-6)
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This commandment\u00a0<\/span>has not been<\/span> given<\/span><\/span> only to<\/span> priests<\/span>,<\/span> but also<\/span> the people:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor print any marks on yourselves: I am the L<\/span>ord<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> (Leviticus 19:28)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pagans<\/span>,<\/span> in<\/span> their desperate<\/span> grief<\/span> at<\/span> the death<\/span> of the loved ones<\/span> made <\/span>baldness on their<\/span> head,<\/span> cut<\/span> their<\/span> beard<\/span>,<\/span> cut themselves<\/span> in flesh and<\/span> made \u200b\u200b<\/span>print marks upon<\/span> them.<\/span> There are other passages<\/span> of the Scripture<\/span> in which it is<\/span> written about<\/span> this pagan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> practice<\/span>,<\/span> for<\/span> they had no<\/span> hope<\/span> about<\/span> the eternal life<\/span> of<\/span> their dead<\/span>.<\/span> They often<\/span> let themselves<\/span> affected by the<\/span> death of a man<\/span> up<\/span> to losing the sense to<\/span> live.<\/span> Today<\/span> there are many<\/span> people who<\/span> receive<\/span> the death of their relatives in such a way<\/span> because<\/span> they don’t know\u00a0<\/span>God. The same has happened to me, either<\/span>.<\/span> When<\/span> I was 9<\/span> years old and<\/span> my<\/span> mother died<\/span>, I wanted to<\/span> die<\/span> and<\/span> I did not<\/span> see any<\/span> sense in <\/span>staying alive.<\/span> Mother’s death<\/span> affected me<\/span> beyond measure,<\/span> but<\/span> things would have been<\/span> different<\/span> if I had<\/span>\u00a0known God<\/span>.<\/span> In cases like this<\/span> our Lord<\/span> wants<\/span> us <\/span><\/span><\/span>to look at<\/span> Him<\/span> with<\/span> hope.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not<\/span> written<\/span> anywhere<\/span> in the Bible about<\/span> wearing<\/span> black<\/span> clothes<\/span> at our relatives’<\/span> death<\/span> and if<\/span> we<\/span> ignore<\/span> it<\/span> we do not<\/span> sin,<\/span> but<\/span> we could<\/span> convey<\/span> people<\/span>\u00a0other<\/span>\u00a0message<\/span> than we intended to<\/span>.<\/span> May God give us<\/span> wisdom to<\/span> know<\/span> how to act<\/span> in any situation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
