Why isn\u2019t there any word in <\/em>the Bible\u00a0coming from Jesus concerning the way we should fast?<\/em> It is\u00a0not even explained how\u00a0we should fast.<\/em> What are the \u201crules\u201d\u00a0a Christian respects when he fasts if this thing is\u00a0not mentioned in the Bible? <\/em>Jesus did not say not to eat meat, milk, etc. But this is the way we fast.<\/em> What explanation can you give me?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Jesus talked a lot about fasting, about how we should fast and all these teaching are\u00a0written on the pages of the New Testament. Let\u2019s look at some of them.<\/p>\n
The motivation counts<\/h2>\n
Jesus addressed the most important aspects of our relationship with God when\u00a0He said the famous sermon on the Mount\u00a0and He said the following regarding fasting:<\/p>\n
Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.\u00a0But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face\u00a0so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. (The Gospel of\u00a0Matthew 6:16-18)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Before you fast, it is very important\u00a0to ask yourself why you do this? What do you want to accomplish? What is your motivation? You see, according to this biblical passage, some\u00a0were fasting\u00a0because\u00a0this was the situation of those times, it was considered that the one who\u00a0fasts\u00a0is a godly man, that was a way to measure their piety and some put on a gloomy face to show the great efforts\u00a0they made\u00a0to live godly. But, the effort was to impress people. The correct motivation when you fast is\u00a0to show yourself to the heavenly Father. The same text also says that\u00a0when you want to impress people, or you simply\u00a0uphold a tradition, this\u00a0is all you have accomplished by your fast,\u00a0that\u2019s all. I mean, people saw you, some of\u00a0them have appreciated this, or you simply have\u00a0established a tradition. That\u2019s all.\u00a0That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n
The wrong attitude\u00a0thwarts fasting<\/h2>\n
We can see this truth reading the following passage:<\/p>\n
And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:\u00a0\u201dTwo men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.\u00a0The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: \u2018God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.\u00a0I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.\u2019\u00a0But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, \u2018God, be merciful to me, the sinner!\u2019\u00a0I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.\u201d (The Gospel of\u00a0Luke 18:9-14)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The Pharisee used the\u00a0religion\u00a0to have authority before others and\u00a0fasting was\u00a0used for the same purpose. God does not like such a fast and He says clearly that\u00a0He does not accept it, as long as man\u00a0doesn\u2019t humble\u00a0and repent\u00a0of the\u00a0committed sins, so as to leave\u00a0them definitely. Have you humbled yourself\u00a0to repent from your sins? Or you just\u00a0fast so as to be\u00a0as others are?<\/p>\n
Jesus and His disciples didn\u2019t observe groundless fasting<\/h2>\n
As we have seen <\/span>in the above example, Pharisees used to fast twice a week. The disciples of John\u00a0the Baptist\u00a0and took the same\u00a0practice. Here\u2019s\u00a0the discussion they once had on this subject:<\/p>\n
John\u2019s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, \u201cWhy do John\u2019s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?\u201d\u00a0And Jesus said to them, \u201cWhile the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.\u00a0But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.\u00a0No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.\u00a0No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.\u201d\u00a0(The Gospel of\u00a0Mark 2:18-22)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
This case is described in the other two synoptic Gospels, that are Luke and Matthew, that present some interesting details. The apostle Matthew says that Jesus answered like this:<\/p>\n
\u201cThe attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.\u201d (The Gospel of Matthew 9:15)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The Lord Jesus wanted to show that\u00a0He didn\u2019t\u00a0accept\u00a0fasting just because it had become a routine, but because it\u00a0had a motivation, such as grief. Then,\u00a0Jesus always said the comparison with the patch of unshrunk coat\u00a0and with the old wineskin and the new wine in all three places in the Scriptures where this case is\u00a0mentioned. With both examples He shows that the Christian teaching that He has brought\u00a0is not a new patch on an old garment, just as\u00a0the old\u00a0wineskins of the\u00a0old teachings as those of the Pharisee, can not\u00a0have any dealings with\u00a0the new and the right teaching of the\u00a0Lord Jesus Christ. Evangelist Luke says Jesus added later:<\/p>\n
And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, \u2018The old is good enough.\u2019\u00a0(The Gospel\u00a0of\u00a0Luke 5:39)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
So, He\u00a0showed that when people live with a tradition they do not want to deny it, even when it no longer makes sense.<\/p>\n
Fasting is a necessity\u00a0for\u00a0spreading the\u00a0Gospel<\/h2>\n
Once the disciples came to Jesus and told him about a demon-possessed man\u00a0that they could not\u00a0cast out demons. After Jesus rebuked\u00a0the devil and that left the man, the disciples asked Jesus why they couldn\u2019t drive\u00a0it out.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, \u2018Move from here to there,\u2019 and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.\u00a0But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. (The\u00a0Gospel of\u00a0Matthew 17:20-21)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Again you can see clearly the same principle that the fast should have a serious reason, in this case,\u00a0the servants of the\u00a0Gospel must fast\u00a0to\u00a0drive out evil spirits from a man possessed by them.<\/p>\n
As you see, the Lord Jesus talked enough about fasting. How will you fast from now on?<\/p>\n
