Christians receive different\u00a0opinions and teachings about sports in different churches and\u00a0denominations. I assume that this\u00a0made the readers of\u00a0the portal to ask me this question, wanting to know what the Bible says in this regard. In the New Testament there are several references to sports and professional athletes. I will review some of these texts to see what God wants to teach us about professional sports.<\/p>\n

Professional sport is an image that reflects spiritual truths <\/strong><\/h2>\n

When he wrote to Corinthians that he did not take\u00a0a payment from them\u00a0for the job\u00a0he had\u00a0done, not to put an obstacle\u00a0to the\u00a0Gospel and that\u00a0he\u00a0had to\u00a0suffer many straits and restraints to be able to\u00a0serve them, Apostle Paul wrote:<\/p>\n

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.\u00a0Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.\u00a0Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air;\u00a0but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.\u00a0(1 Corinthians 9:24-27)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In ancient\u00a0rich city Corinth, every four years were held pan\u2013Corinthians sports games where everybody came to watch the athletes and\u00a0follow the\u00a0competitions.Because Corinthians knew so much about professional sports, Apostle Paul\u00a0decided to use their knowledge about sports to teach them the\u00a0spiritual truths:<\/p>\n

To\u00a0run for the heavenly prize<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As sportsmen must do the greatest possible effort\u00a0to\u00a0gain the\u00a0prize, we, Christians must\u00a0do a maximal effort to spread the Gospel\u00a0so that we may\u00a0get our prize in heaven.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To\u00a0refrain from any barriers to achieve the goal<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To achieve that goal and to receive the trophy, sportsmen are forced to refrain from many things, namely to refrain from things that are common for other people and that\u00a0 do not necessary include something sinful.So we, Christians,\u00a0must refrain from things that hinder us in one way or another one to be effective in the\u00a0ministry of spreading the Gospel.<\/p>\n

To work for an eternal glory <\/strong><\/h2>\n

All effort of the professional sportsmen is directed to receive a crown that dries up. That was in those days, sportsmen did not receive medals as nowadays, but only a wreath of laurel and\u00a0only\u00a0the champion received it.\u00a0There were not the second or the third places. The one who received the crown, that is the champion, received a great honor that lasted\u00a0until\u00a0another became a champion, and then it was forgotten little by little.\u00a0The Christian\u2019s effort in the\u00a0Gospel\u00a0will be rewarded with an eternal glory in heaven. Here\u2019s why the professional\u00a0sports, if it\u2019s an aim in itself, is as\u00a0ineffectual as\u00a0other earthly purposes to which people dedicate themselves. No more, no less.<\/p>\n

vTo\u00a0fight\u00a0according to the rules\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another truth from the life of the professional athletes\u00a0is told by the apostle Paul said, when he said:<\/p>\n

Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. (2 Timothy 2:5)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As there are set rules at the competition, and anyone who violates them is disqualified, so is the Christian life, when God has established rules that are written on the pages of Holy Scriptures, and who violates them will be disqualified and will not receive the crown\u00a0that doesn\u2019t dry up.<\/p>\n

Sports is an effective tool to\u00a0spread the Gospel to people <\/strong><\/h2>\n

I am a sportsman and I\u00a0used professional sports\u00a0to spread\u00a0the Gospel to people. I founded the Taekwon-Do \u201cStolas Leukas\u201d club, where many boys and girls have known the Lord Jesus and eternal life by studying the Holy Scriptures and today they\u00a0spread the message of the\u00a0Gospel in the same way in Moldova and other countries. By God\u2019s mercy, I was offered the opportunity to teach, to encourage and help other professional athletes, that now use their sports such as basketball, soccer, boxing to share the Gospel. Considering this,\u00a0we started a\u00a0Mission through sports faculty\u00a0at the Inductive Bible Study Institute from Moldova and I published some articles on the portal Moldova Cre\u0219tin\u0103<\/a>one of them being the 10 basic principles to achieve success in evangelization and discipleship through sports ministry. <\/a><\/p>\n
