I have met with a Christian woman from the church\u00a0of a different\u00a0denomination and\u00a0we\u00a0begin talking about receiving the Holy Spirit.<\/i> She was trying to convince me that I must be baptized with the Holy Spirit and she said that when you\u00a0repent, you are\u00a0led by the Holy Spirit, He rebukes you, and guides you, but\u00a0He is not in you.<\/em> But when you are baptized with the Holy Spirit, you are filled\u00a0with the Holy Spirit.<\/i> Is it\u00a0any difference between receiving the Holy Spirit and being filled with\u00a0the Holy Spirit, or not?<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We find the answer in the book of Acts<\/h4>\n

Before I answer this question,\u00a0I suggest the Christian woman that has asked me this question, and all readers who want to study by\u00a0themselves\u00a0and\u00a0find the\u00a0answer to this question to make the next steps of study:<\/p>\n

Read the whole\u00a0book Acts and note wherever the Holy Spirit is mentioned.You can\u00a0 follow my example\u00a0of noting\u00a0in the International Inductive Study Bible namely, to draw a flame or any other sign you want everywhere\u00a0the Holy Spirit is\u00a0mentioned\u00a0together with the personal pronouns or synonyms\u00a0that relate to Him.<\/li>\n
  2. Make a\u00a0chart\u00a0of two columns and in the first column\u00a0write all that you learn about receiving the Holy Spirit and in the second column all\u00a0that relates to\u00a0the filling\u00a0with the Holy Spirit or being filled with the Holy Spirit.<\/li>\n
  3. In the end, write your own conclusions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    People become Christians when\u00a0they receive the Holy Spirit<\/h4>\n

    Reading the book of Acts I noticed that the word \u201creceived\u201d is used to\u00a0show the cases when someone received\u00a0the Holy\u00a0Spirit for the first time and thus became a Christian. This event is called by the Lord Jesus \u201cbaptism with the Holy Spirit\u201d and\u00a0He talked with the apostles about it before he\u00a0ascended to heaven, when He said:<\/p>\n

    For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.(Acts 1:5)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Also then, referring to the same event that\u00a0had to happen to the apostles \u201cnot many days after\u201d, the Lord Jesus said:<\/p>\n

    But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    The Lord Jesus\u00a0meant the event of the descent of the Holy Spirit on earth that happened on the day\u00a0of Pentecost\u00a0and it is described so:<\/p>\n

    When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.\u00a0And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.\u00a0And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.\u00a0And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Even if it is written that they were filled with the Holy Spirit, the context shows us clearly that that happened to the apostles\u00a0for the first time and that the Holy Spirit had not lived in anybody of them\u00a0before, but\u00a0He\u00a0came and filled\u00a0them for the first time at that moment. The same day, when Apostle Peter preached to the crowd gathered because of what had happened, he made reference to the prophets from the Old Testament and He said that then, in the day of Pentecost, God had poured His Spirit on every being and urged all of them to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

    People filled the Holy Spirit proclaim the Gospel very boldly<\/h4>\n

    When It refers to\u00a0courageous Christian actions and especially related to\u00a0preaching the\u00a0Gospel in dangerous situations, the Word of God describes those who have preached that they were full with the Holy Spirit. Thus, after the apostles Peter and John had healed the crippled from birth\u00a0at the gate of the Temple and after\u00a0that great evangelism had been, when thousand of people believed and repented, the apostles were brought before\u00a0the Synod,\u00a0where they talked being \u201cfull with the Holy Spirit\u201d (Acts 4:8). After Peter and John had spoken before Synod, they came back\u00a0to the church that was\u00a0praying for them, so that the Lord might give them power to proclaim God\u2019s Word with boldness.<\/p>\n

    And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:31)(NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    All Christians described in this passage had\u00a0received the Holy Spirit long before, but\u00a0then again they\u00a0were filled\u00a0with the Holy Spirit and that was manifested by the way they were preaching the Word of God with boldness, without being intimidated by the enemies of the Gospel.<\/p>\n

    The filling\u00a0with the Holy Spirit is visible to people around you<\/h4>\n

    When it was the need in\u00a0the first church\u00a0from Jerusalem to\u00a0choose deacons, the apostles told the whole assembly to choose \u201cseven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom\u201d.So, people could recognize those who were\u00a0full with\u00a0the Holy Spirit by the way how they\u00a0behaved\u00a0day by day and that they were obedient to\u00a0all teachings of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0Jesus and were sharing God\u2019s Word with power and boldness, without fear or\u00a0being intimidated by anyone. The Scripture relates us details about Stephen, one of these deacons. His filling\u00a0with the Holy Spirit was manifested by the fact that he preached the Gospel with boldness\u00a0even to\u00a0martyrdom.<\/p>\n

    In\u00a0the end,\u00a0I want to tell the Christian woman\u00a0who\u00a0asked me that question, that\u00a0every\u00a0man receives\u00a0the Holy Spirit\u00a0when he enters the New Covenant of the Lord Jesus by faith and repentance. Receiving the Holy Spirit is identical to the baptism\u00a0with the Holy Spirit and filling with the Holy Spirit takes place when we are\u00a0not intimidated or\u00a0defeated by fear, but with boldness we go and\u00a0do what\u00a0the Holy Spirit who dwells in us urges us to do.God help us to live in this way.<\/p>\n
