The Angel of God<\/h3>\n

On the eve of Israel’s attack on Jericho, as Joshua searched the area around the city and the city itself, he lifted his eyes and saw a man standing before him with his sword drawn in his hand.<\/p>\n

Joshua went to him and said to him, \u201cAre you for us or for our adversaries?\u201d He said, \u201cNo; rather I indeed come now\u00a0as\u00a0captain of the host of the\u00a0Lord.\u201d And Joshua\u00a0fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, \u201cWhat has my lord to say to his servant?\u201d The captain of the\u00a0Lord\u2019s\u00a0host said to Joshua, \u201cRemove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.\u201d And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:13-15, NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The man seen by Joshua is not an ordinary man. He is the captain of the Lord’s host, sent to give instructions and to help Joshua and the people in conquering Jericho. At the sight of this man, Joshua throws himself to the ground and worships him without realizing the presence of a supernatural being. According to the culture then, people worshiped the person with greater authority. Moreover, when Joshua addresses this being with the word “lord”, he uses the Hebrew word “adon” used for human beings, not YHWEH.<\/p>\n

Who is this person who identifies himself with the Chief of the Lord’s Army? In the Old and New Testaments, we see God manifesting Himself in the different forms of the people of Israel. In the given text we have a theophany, a temporary manifestation of God in human form. Theophany is the divine manifestation of the presence of God in a visible way known to man. Therefore, God is revealed not only by Word and wonder, by prophecies and signs, but also by His presence in a form perceived by men. Thus, in the given passage, God reveals to Joshua in a visible, human way.<\/p>\n

One of the most important forms of God’s divine presence in the Old Testament is “the Angel of the Lord”. In the Old Testament the angel of God is the personal emissary of God, who has performed special functions at certain times in Israel’s history. The angel of the Lord served the people of Israel as a guide and guardian.<\/p>\n

Behold, I am going to send\u00a0an angel before you to guard you along the way and\u00a0to bring you into the place which I have prepared. Be on your guard before him and obey his voice;\u00a0do not be rebellious toward him, for he will not pardon your transgression, since\u00a0My name is in him. But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then\u00a0I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. For My angel will go before you and bring you in to\u00a0the land of\u00a0the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them. (Exodus 23:20-23, NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This angel appears to Hagar (Genesis 16:7), to Abraham and Lot (Genesis 18:19; 22:11-12), to Jacob (Genesis 32:29-31), to Moses (Exodus 3:2-6), to Balaam (Numbers 22:21), to Abraham’s servant (Genesis 24:7, 40), to Gideon (Judges 6:11-14). He brought out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt (Exodus 13:21, 14:19) and punished the people when they rebelled against the Lord (Judges 2:1-4).<\/p>\n

The angel of the Lord appears in human form<\/h3>\n

Then Jacob was left alone, and a man\u00a0wrestled with him until daybreak. When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob\u2019s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him. Then he said, \u201cLet me go, for the dawn is breaking.\u201d But he said, \u201cI will not let you go unless you bless me.\u201d So he said to him, \u201cWhat is your name?\u201d And he said, \u201cJacob.\u201d He said, \u201cYour name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.\u201d Then\u00a0Jacob asked him and said, \u201cPlease tell me your name.\u201d But he said, \u201cWhy is it that you ask my name?\u201d And he blessed him there. So Jacob named the place Peniel, for\u00a0he said, \u201cI have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved.\u201d Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over\u00a0Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh. Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob\u2019s thigh in the sinew of the hip. (Genesis 32:24-32, NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The angel of God presents divine attributes and presents the future (Genesis 16:10-12, Exodus 23:21) and receives the worship (Exodus 3:5).<\/p>\n

In many passages, the Angel of the Lord is used interchangeably with the name Yahweh in such a way that it does not create any doubt that it is the manifestation of God Himself. However, the angel and God are not clearly equated, because the angel often refers to God in the third person.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, we can say that the presence of this man shows us that God is helping the people of Israel. The Lord Himself will fight for Joshua and the people of Israel. It is not the people of Israel who make the walls of Jericho fall, but God.<\/p>\n
