Is it necessary for a Christian to attend the graduation ball?

Question:

Is it proper for a Christian to attend the graduation ball?

balul de absolvireI do not know at what school you are going and what kind of colleagues you have. If your parents are Christians, it’s good to ask their advice and/or maybe you’d better go with them to the graduation ball so there’s someone to support you. This is a good question and should be treated as such. However, before you make a decision, ask God what is best for you and keep your path pure (Ps. 119: 9). To make the right discernment, I propose to look at what Paul wrote to the Philippians:

Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. (Philippians 4:8) (NASB)

Let’s do a word study to better understand the filter.

  1. True – the Greek word is true ἀληθής alēthēs which means real, which you can not make any remark, because it is authentic. So, if you go to the graduation ball, will you be able to remain authentic, a true Christian?
  2. Honorable – σεμνός semnos, which means seriously, worthy, something that can be revered as an example. Can you be an example for your colleagues and teachers? There will be very great pressures, will you be able to choose to stay in their memory for an example?
  3. Right – δίκαιος dikaios, which is righteous, innocent, just. Is this the event you want to go to a righteous one?
  4. Pure – the Greek word is ἁγνός hagnos, which is meaningless, holy, sacred. Ask yourself the question: “What will be there will it be holy and spotless?” Or “Can I remain holy?”
  5. Lovely – προσφιλής prosphilēs, agreable, pleasing. What I will see at that event, will it be agreeable?
  6. Worthy of praise – εὔφημος  euphëmos, which has a good reputation, which is well-known. Does attending the graduation promise me I will leave with a good reputation? After this graduation ball, what will I be talking about?
  7. Good deed – ἀρετή aretē, virtue, moral goodness. Can I do good deeds at this graduation ball, will I be able to show moral goodness?
  8. Praise – ἔπαινος epainos, fame, worthy of praise. Think what fame you will have after this graduation ball?

May God help you choose correctly according to His will, so keep yourself pure and be a worthy example!
